sectional camp cots, such as areused by UNITED "sures PATENT 4 JOSEPH H. SHENEY, or DECATUR, LLINOIS.
JF C
I I PORTABLEFOI-DING sncTIoNAL oaivrr cor.
Application filed December 4, 1922. Serial No. 604,965?
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr'H. SHENEY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at 951 S. Webster: Street, Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Folding Sectional- Camp Cots, of which'the following is a specification. i v r This invention relates to portable folding campers or cross-country-travelers; I
' -An'objec't of the invention is tozpro'vide' a cot that may be readily taken apart, or assembled, and that is extremely portable.
A further object is'to provide a cot which when assembled, will be rigid and comfortable.
A further object is to provide a cot that is inexpensive and that is strong and well braced when assembled.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective of the assembled cot- Fig. 2 is a detail showing the method of supporting the pad from the end cross arms;
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are views of an upper corner of the frame showing the relation of the several parts;
Fig. 6 is a view of a wedge used to detachably secure the several parts together at each upper corner;
Fig. 7 is a view of a leg showing the foot extensions in opposite directions;
Fig. 8 is a view of an end of a lower side rail showing the key look; i
Fig. 9 is a view of a part of the leg containing the key socket;
Fig. 10 is a view of an end of the end cross arm with its clamping slot;
Figs. 11 and 12 are views of the, hinged lower side arms, showing hinged joints, and securing pins;
Figs. 13 and 14 are views of the hinged upper side arms, showing the hinged joint, and latch, and
Fig. 15 shows the parts of the cot upon the pad ready to be folded and packed.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the pad 1 is provided with hooks 2 which hook over the end cross arms 3,'and hooks 4 at each end which hook into the links The legs 6, Figs. 1 and 7, are provided with oppositely extending feet 7, which latter support the cot against endwise shaking. The legs are joined, preferably by a rivet at their upper ends, at 8,
ter, and a key-socket 10 onthe outer leg at the bottom. The upper side arm'11 is hingedon the under side at 12, and provided Withalatch '13, which serves to s eand are'provided with slots 9 ,whichregiscurely. fasten the hinged *partstogether.
The sidearm 11 is also provided with a fold-' 'ing leg 14, which when turned down, as in Fig. 1,; supports the cot at the center; At each end of side/arm. 11, is a shouldered header, 15, providedat its 'end'=with a' diagon'ally out notch 16, "see Fig.4, heme oftheheaderbeingLo-f a sizeto fit. inthe slots 9 of legs 6.
The lower side arm s17, igs. 1,11, and
12, arehinged at 18 and have socket clamps 19 to keep them in alignment, and securing pins 20., The arms 17 are also provided with brackets 21, which engage the lower endsof supporting legs 14. At each end of the arms 17 are key locks 22; see Figs. 1, 7 and 8. The braces 30 may be used if desired to add additional strength to the assembled cot. The end cross arms 3 are flattened at each end at 23 and provided with notches 24 arranged to slip down in the diagonal notches 16 in side arms 11, see Figs. 1 and 10. The ends'of flattened parts 23 are provided with links 5 to engage the hooks 4 on the pad 1. Wedges 25, having slots '26, are
preferably flexibly secured to cross arms 3 as shown, and are intended to fit over the headers 15, to hold the headers, legs, and cross arms rigid, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5. 1
In assembling, each upper side arm 11 is opened out, and the latches 13 secured. The ends of the headers 15 are inserted in the slots 9 of legs 6, at each end; the lower side arms17, are next opened out, and secured by pins 20, the key locks 22 are next inserted in the key sockets 10 at the bottom of the outer one of legs 6; the middle leg supports 14 are next turned down and pressed in the brackets 21.
' The ends 23 of end cross arms 3 are now pressed in the diagonal notches'16, and outside of the upper part of legs 6. as shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 5, and then the wedges 25 are pressed down tightly over the headers 15, between the enlarged shoulders and the top of legs 6. The frame of the'cot is now ready for the pad 1, which isthen hooked over the end cross arms 3 by Ihooks 2, and at eaclrend by. hooks 4 in links 5. The wedges 25 are now driven down tightly, preferably by a hammer, and the cot is rigidly and safely assembled, and is ready for use.
The several parts of the frame may he made of strong wood, with metal reinforce ments where desired, or may be made of steel stampings and mouldings. The pad is usually made of canvas, but other suitable material may be used.
I claim:
1. A folding sectional cot, comprising folding side arms having shouldered headers, other side arms having key locks, legs having feet pointing in different directions, the legs provided with openings to engage the side arms, end cross arms constructed to engage the headers of the side arms, means to clamp the headers, legs, and end cross arms, and a detachable pad arranged to engage the end cross arms.
2. A folding sectional cot, comprising folding side arms having shouldered headers, other folding side arms having key locks, means to securely lock the side arms in an extended position, legs having feet pointing in different directions, said legs provided with openings to engage the side arms, end cross arms provided with notches to engage the headers of the side arms, slotted wedges to engage the headers and clamp the headers, legs, and end cross arms, and a detachable pad.
3. A folding sectional cot, comprising folding side arms having shouldered headers, a notch in said header, other folding side arms having key locks, means to securely lock the side arms in extended position, legs having feet pointing in different directions said legs provided Withopenings to engage the headers and the key locks, end cross arms provided with notches to engage the notches in the headers of the side arms, slotted wedges to engage the headers between shoulders on one side and the legs on the other side, folding legs to support the upper side arms and arranged to engage the lower side arms, and a detachable pad.
In testimony whereof 1* hereby aflix my signature.
JOSEPH SHENEY.
