invented certain new I srncrrrcnfrron forming part of nei-.ters Patent No. 634,665, dated october 1o, 189e.
` f Application filed April 17, 1899. Serial No.7l3,322. (Nomocleld To all whom rit-may concern.: V
Beit known that l, DAVID HOLGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have andA useful Improvements in Knockdown Oots, of which the folscale, of the joining of the bars formin ga side rlowing, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and .forming a part thereof, is a full and complete description, -l snnicient to enable those skilled in the art to understand, make,`and use the same.
Figure l is a side elevation of a cot embodying the invention; Fig; 2, an end elevationthereof; Fig. 3, an end elevation thereof with the canvasl removed and the frame folded; Fig. 4, a side elevation with the canvas removed andthe frame folded, asin Fig. 3 5 and Fig. 5, a side elevation, on an enlarged rail of the canvas.
The principal object of this invention is to obtain a knockdown cot in which the canvas may be removed from lthe frame, and such frame can v thereupon be folded into small space and one-'convenient for shipping, a knockdown cot whereof the lframe when in position for use with the canvas thereon will be strong, not liable to break when the bed thereon is used by a heavy person, and a knockdown cot which is readily changed from its arrangement of parts for use into condition for shipping.
A reference-letter applied to designate a given part is used to indicate such part throughout the several views Wherever the same appears.
Fig. 1 shows the side rail A, supported on the three sets of legs or three horses B B B, connected together by the tie-rods C C". The benches or horses B B are constructed of the parts or legs b o", pivctally joined together midway of their length at h2, as by a bolt, as is clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The tie-rods C Co are pivotally attached at their Iends by means of the interposed hinge D (illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7) to the parts or legs b b', respectively.
l'The arrangement and comparative length olf the legs l) b' and the tie-rods G C0 are such that when the legs are pivotally turned from the'position thereof in Figs. 1 and 2 to the position thereof in Figs and l the legs formj ing or constituting one bench or horse B are drawn or lie adjacent to the legs forming or constituting the adjacent bench or' horse l5, asis well illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and when the legs'forming or constituting one horse or bench B are iu the position illustrated .in Figs. 1 and 2 such tie-rods lC CD force and rigidly or irmlyhold such benches or horses in the relative position illustrated in Fig. l. To accomplish the above-recited result, I
construct three benches or horses B B B and attach a tie-rod, by means of the interposed hinge D, to one end-0f one leg of one bench orhorse, as, say, leg Z9, and to the other leg, as it may properly be termed, of the next adjacent bench orv horse, as, say, b', and, the legs h b being at least ofthe length of the tierodsG C, so positioning the point of attachment of the hinges D D to the respective legs that when the legs are in the position illustrated in Fig. 3 the tie-rods are of the proper length to extend in the manner shownin Fig. 4.
In the arrangement of the legs forming or constituting the `benches or horses which I have illustrated and the tie-rods joining them together and holding them y firmly in place tie-rod C is secured at one end to legb and at the other end to leg h of the adjacent bench or horse, and tie-rod Co is attached at one end to leg b' and at the other end to leg b of the adjacent bench or horse.
E E are hooks attached, respectively, lo the ends of the legs h b' in position so that the hooks or loops F F may be respectively engaged therewith when the cot is to beplaced in use.
G is the canvas (which ymay be of Wovenv wire, of cotton liber, or of other suitable material) on which the mattress or blankets forming the' bed is laid. Canvas 'G may be attached to rails A Ain the ordinary way; but I prefer'tc make each of the rails A A or two side bars joined together at the central horse or bench. To do this, I make rail A of bars a ci', and to one of such bars-saya-I attach casting A,.having a socket in one end thereof, into which the bar a fits, asis well illustrated in Fig. 5. i
F is a metal -loop extending through bar ct and casting A', securing the casting in place, at the same time securing such loop F in place, so that when it is secured to hook E of the central bench or horse (the strain at such bench or horse being greater than on the end benches or horses) the rail A Will not be readily broken by the strain on loop F.
Additional loops F F are placed on the rails A A, near the ends thereof, to engage with the hooks E E on the end horses or benches B B Vhen the cot embodying this invention is in position for use as a bed, the canvas G prevents spreading ot' the legs b b, forming the horses or benches B B B, respectively, because of the rails A A being secured (by loops F F or their equivalent) to the hooks E E, as hereinbetore described, and the tie-rods C C0 prevent any swaying of such benches or l horses. The knockdown cot thus obtained l is therefore firm and strong and not liable to get out of order.
In order to obtaina pillow, particularly when canvas woven of cotton ber is used for the cot-bed, I extend such canvas beyond the rails A A, as at II, Fig. l, and provide pins or other fastenings I, to which such extension II may be secured. The clothing of the person using the cot fora bed may be folded and placed at the end of the canvas G and part II then brought over into substantially the position thereof illustrated in Fig. l and scstance under the part Hin place of clothing.
I prefer to use fiatbar-iron for the tie-rods C C0 and to pivotally join or tie such tie-rods together, as by the pivot or pin J, Fig. l.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a knockdown cot, the combination of a canvas, side rails to which the canvas is secured, such side rails comprising, respectively, bars, a metal band secured to one bar to extend beyond it and forming a socket in which the end of the remaining bar fits, and metal loops extending through the side rails, the loop midway of the side rail also extending through the metal band; substantially as l described.
