UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS CALMES, OF MERRILL, OREGON.
FOLDABLE COT.
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS CALMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrill, in the county of Klamath and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Foldable Cots, of which the following is a4 specification.
Theinvention relates to spring couches or cots, and more particularly to the class of foldable or knock-down spring couches or y provision of a couch or cot of this character wherein the side bars are foldable and separable from the head and foot cross rails, which latter are also foldable, and wherein the legs are hinged to the side bars and are braced in a novel manner. `Thus the couch or cot when set up for use will be strong and can be readily knocked down and brought into compact form when not in use, or for the transporting of the same in a convenient manner. as
A further object of the invention is the provision of a couch or cot which is simple in construction, strong, durable, readily and easily knocked down or set up, and also which is inexpensive in manufacture.
I/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a couch or cot constructed in accordance with the invention, the same being set up for use. Fig. 2 lis a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of one of the Vhinge joints. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View thereof showing the same partlyfolded. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the separable cornerjoints, the parts being separated from Specification of Letters Patent.

each other. Fig. 7 is a side elevationof one of the side bars folded. Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the couch or cot when folded and prior to the rolling of the same. Fig. 9 is a sectional View on the line 9 9 of Fig. 1. Fig. 10 is a sectional view on the line 10-10 of Fig. 1. Y
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the couch or cot comprises spaced parallel side bars A, head and foot cross rails B and C respectively, and a wire fabric spring D, the side bars and the head and foot rails being formed from inverted U-shaped or channel irons,'and include sections 5 and 6 respectively, hingedtogether in a manner presently described. l
Connected in the channeled side bars A near the outer ends thereof are foldable supporting legs 7, the same being pivoted at 8 thereto, whereby they may fold within the channel bars when the couch or cot knocked down, the legs when swung outwardly being designed to support the said couch or cot. Pivotally connected to the head and footrails B and C spaced from the outer ends thereof are braces 9, the same being formed with slotted ends 10 which engage headed lugs or pins 11 mounted in the legs 7 so that the latter will be prevented from folding inwardly when supporting the couch or cot for use. The braces are permitted to be folded inwardly into the cha-nnel bars of the said rails B and C when disengaged from the legs 7 and the couch or cot is being knocked down.
The section 5 of each of the side bars and the head and foot rails has secured thereto an inverted U-shaped coupling sleeve 12, the same being formed medially of its length with depending ears 13, while mounted in the inner end of the section 6 adjacent thereto is a casting 14 forming a hinged connection formed with a pintle eye 15 through which is passed a pintle 16, the saine being passed through the ears 13, thus swingingly connecting the sections 5 and 6 together whereby they may be folded into parallel relation to each other or brought into alinement with one another, the sleeve being formed with diametrically opposed slots 17 which open through the lower free longitudinal edges and in these slots engage headed lugs or pins 18 permanently mounted in isv the section 6 whereby the said latter section will be firmly locked in alinement with the section 5 and also will prevent undue strain upon the pintle 16 when the cot or couch is set up for use.
Permanently mounted at the outer ends of the sections 5 .and 6 of the side bars A are coupling blocks 19, each being provided with a substantially lrey-hole-shaped slot or socket 20, while permanently mounted in the outer ends of the sections 5 and 6 of the head and foot rails B and C are the companion coupling members 21 for the blocks 19, the said members being correspondingly shaped at their engaging ends with respect to the slots or sockets 2O for insertion therein whereby the said head and foot rails can be detachably secured to the side bars, as will be clearly apparent, the fabric spring D being suitably connected with the sections 5 and 6 of the head and foot rails B and C, and on the alinement of the sections 5 and 6 of the side bars A when the couch or cot is set up the said fabric spring D becomes tensioned and will exert a pulling action thereon so as to prevent the folding of the said sections of the side bars at the hinge joints thereof when the couch or cot is set up for use.
Carried by the head and foot rails B and C are foldable guard frames, each comprising foldable sections 22, each including spaced vertical members 23 which are pivoted at 24 to one section of the head and foot rails, and a horizontal member 25 which is pivoted at 26 to the members 23, one of the members 25 of one section 22 being provided with an inverted Ushaped sleeve 27 which is permanently fixed thereto and is adapted to receive the free end of the member 25 ofthe other section22 for the coupling of the said. sections when the couch or cot is set up, and in thismanner the said sections 22 are held in alinement with each other, yet on the folding of the couch or cot the section 22 will simultaneously collapse or fold therewith.
In the folding of the couch or cot the braces 9 are detached from the pins 11 on the legs 7, and thereafter the latter and the said braces 9 are folded inwardly into the channel bars of the side bars A and head and foot rails B and C, Awhereupon the said head and foot rails are detached from the side bars so that the sections 5 and 6 of both of the said rails and side bars can be folded into parallel relation to each other, thus bringing the couch or cot into knock-down condition. The side bars A after the folding thereof are placed upon the fabric spring D which assumes a position as shown in Fig. 8 so that on the rolling up of the spring the folded side bars will be held therein, and in this manner the couch or cot will be in a therefore a more extended explanationhas been omitted.
What is claimed is ln a collapsible bed, the combination of end rails, side rails, each end and side rail including pivotally connected sect-ions foldable one upon the other, sleeves fixed to thc` pivotal points of the side and end rails and adapted to overlap the joints between the sections at the upper side thereof for preventing the folding of the same in one direction, and head and foot guards carried by the end sections and each comprising a twopart separable bar, and links pivotally c onnected thereto and to the sections of the end rails.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS CALMES.
