FOLDING SUMMER-HOUSE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,519, dated January 5, 1897 Application filed March 3, 1896. Serial No. 581,6'7 l. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN IV. BOUGHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Summer-Houses, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a folding summerhouse formed of side pieces or panels hinged together, a door, a folding floor, a folding cornice, and a cover, said panels being fitted to said floor and cornice so as to prevent separation of the same.

It also consists of novel means for ad just ing said cover in position.

Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of a folding summer-house embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top or plan view of the floor thereof in open condition. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the same in folded condition. Fig. 4 represents a bottom plan view of the cornice thereof. Fig. 5 represents a perspective View of the same folded. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the side of the house in folded condition, the scale in Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 being different from that in Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a number of vertically-arranged panels, which are hinged together and form the side frame of the summer-house.

B designates a floor which is formed in sections B B hinged together, with the recesses O in its upper face, the same corresponding with the lower ends of the panels A and receiving said ends and embracing the same, thus preventing separation of said panels from below.

D designates a cornice which is formed in sections D D hinged together and formed with the recesses E in the under face of its rim, the same corresponding with the upper ends of the panels A and receiving said ends and embracing the same, thus preventing separation of the panels from above.

One of the panels A has hinged to it the door F, it being noticed that the floor and cornice are cut away, so as not to interfere with the proper motions of said door.

G designates adjacent cross-pieces on the sections D and D respectively, of the cornice D, the same having the hinges of the latter attached thereto, said pieces having therein an opening in which is received the staff H, which is provided with the collars J, between which the top of the canvas or cover K is clamped, the lower end of said cover be ing secured to the cornice D, it being noticed that the staff H may be raised or adjusted so as to properly tighten said cover K, and when so adjusted it will be held in position by the pin L or other suit-able means.

It will be seen that when the device is set up, as, shown in Fig. 1, there is provided a durable, effective, and comparatively inexpensive house of the order of a knockdown.

WVhen the house is to be taken apart, the

staff is disconnected and the cover K removed, after which the cornice is raised from the panels and the latter lifted from the floor, said cornice, panels, and floor then being folded and, if desired, made into a compact bundle convenient for trai'isportation, handling, or storage.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A summer-house having a folding floor with recesses in its upper face, a folding cornice formed of sections hinged together, each having a central cross-bar and a rim with a recess in its under face, foldingside panels with their ends in the recesses of said floor and cornice, a staff fitted in openings in the sectional cross-bar of the cornice, and a cover.

A folding summer-house consisting of a folding floor, having recesses in its upper face with a cut-away portion, a folding cornice With a recess in its under side, hinged panels with ends in said recesses, a door hinged to one of said panels adjacent to said cut-away portions, a stafi secured to crosspieces on said cornice, a cover on the cornice,
