" NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB O. HUNSINGER AND WILLIAM ENSMINGER, OF LAUREL, INDIANA, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO FRANK H. BATT, OF SAME PLACE.
POU LTRY-CRATE.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,954, dated April 2, 1895.
Application filed January 9, 1 895. Serial No. 5 34,338. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, JACOB C. HUNsINGER and WILLIAM ENSMINGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Laurel, in the county of Franklin and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and `useful Improvements in Poultry-Crates; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had jto the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to that class of shipping crates particularly designed for the transportation of poultry and in which the crate is composed of hinged sections adapted Lto fold down upon the base or oor of the crate when not in use forthe purpose of economy in space in packing and trans! porting.
It is the purpose of the invention to so construct the several hinged sections of the crate that the smallest possible space may be occu# pied when folded together, and consists in a crate constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of a crate showing the hinged sections extended and in position to enable the crate to be used for containing and transporting poultry; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the hinged sections folded down upon each other Fig. 3, a transverse section thereof taken on line x :1c of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the base or door of the crate having rigidly secured to its ends brackets B, which brackets have slots a terminating at their inner ends in depressions b.
To the brackets B are hinged end-sections C, which together with said brackets form the ends of the crate when in the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
The section D which forms the top of the crate has hinged to its under side the sections E F so that said sections will nicely fold against the under side of the top section, thereby materially economizing space when the crate is folded.
The ends of the sections E F have pins c 4A is provided with stops cl to limit the extent with which the sections E F may be pulled out and also serve as braces thereto when in an elevated position shown in Fig. l.
lThe sections D E F may consist of suitable frames covered with wire gauze or may be constructed in any well known and preferred manner, and when the sections are folded togcther as shown in Fig. 2, they are secured against unfolding by the hinged sections O which are adapted to fold down upon the top section D and are fastened thereto by means of hinged bails G having eyes c which engage pins jupon the sections O, thus providing a very compact crate when folded and materially economizing in space. Such a crate is also simple in construction and may be manufactured at a greatly reduced cost and the sections may be quickly extended with little trouble for immediate use and may be as readily folded together for packing and transporting.
The end sections C are considered of importance, as they not only form the ends of the crate when'extended, but are adapted to fold down upon the upper side of the section D to retain said section in position.
Havingnow fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A folding poultry crate, consisting of a suitable base or floor, slotted brackets rigidly `connected to the ends thereof, sections hinged to the brackets, a top-section and side-sections vhinged thereto, said side-sections having guide-pins which engage with the slots in the brackets, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A folding crate, consisting of a suitable base or floor, slotted brackets connected to the ends thereof and having depressions at their inner extremities, and suitable hinged sections to forni thetop, sides and ends of the crate, said side-sections having pins to engage with the slots in the brackets and with the depressions thereof, substantially as and for l the purpose described. In testimony that We claimthe above We 8. A folding crate, consisting of a base or have hereunto subscribed our names in the door, slotted brackets connected to the ends presence of two Witnesses.
