COMBINED COOP AND SHIPPING-CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 579,766, dated March 30, 1897.
Application filed. May 29,1896. Serial No. 593,571. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakmont, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, havc invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Coop, Kennel, or Shipping-Grate; and I hereby deolare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 indicates a perspective view of myimproved combined coop, kennel, or shipping-crate. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section, of the side in which the door is formed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing same partly folded. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal view of the same collapsed and in shape for return shipment.
My invention relates to shipping coops or crates for chickens, &c.; and it consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate likeiparts wherever they occur.
Referring to said drawings, a a are doors hinged, respectively, to the narrow portion Z) of the bottom and the narrow front part c and adapted to fold against the grating or latticework d.
e is the top, the inclined portion e of which is hinged internally at its juncture with the flat or horizontal portion e and adapted to fold against or upon the bottom, sides, and end, as shown in the drawings and as hereinafter described.
g is the end, which is hinged to the rear end of the hinged portion 5 of the bottom and is adapted to fold inwardly upon the same, whereby both the end and bottom are folded inwardly against the grating upon the hinges on the front and rear portions of the bottom.
- h and h are the sides, respectively, of the tions 1, 2, and 3, of which section 3 is rigidly secured to the horizontal portion of the top and the narrow front portion of the bottom. Section 2 is hinged to said section 3 and is adapted to fold inwardly against the bottom g, carrying the section 1, which is hinged thereto in such manner that said section 1 is adapted to fold not only inwardly on the hinges which connect sections 2 and 3, but also outwardly on the hinges which connect said section 2 therewith, thus forming a door. The opposite side h is hinged to a piece similar to section 3. The end and top are adapted to be fastened by the hook or any other suitable means. Said end and section 1 of the side are also adapted to be fastened by a similar means. 1
In the application of my device as a coop the same is as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desirable to collapse or fold the same for return, the frame is folded against the lattice.
The end folds inwardly and downwardly upon the bottom, which is adapted to fold inwardly and upwardly against the inner surface of the lattice or grating. The sides are then folded upon the outer surface of the bottom, and finally the inclined portion of the top is folded upon the bottom, collapsing the structure into a very compact body adapted to be readily shipped and handled.
It is obvious that the front sides and ends may be formed of lattice or wire-screen work without departing from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a combined coop and shipping-crate, the combination of the end foldable upon the bottom and inwardly upon the inner face of the front, the sides, one of which is formed in two sections, and the other in three sections and adapted to fold against said bottom, and the top foldable upon said sides, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH E. MURRAY. In presence of-- W. D. HOUGHTELIN, ELMER E. HOUGHTELIN.
