Description

A ,litri-TED STATES. @ArtNr .QFFICEQ i HENRY Evnsson, or HnMPsTEAD, New YORK.
FOLDING COOP OR KENNEL.
SPECIFICATION forming' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY EvEssoN, of:
Hempstead, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Coops or Ken-v nels; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,"and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and fication.
My invention' relates to an improvement in folding coops or kennels; and it consists in the combination of the bottom piece provided v with rigid side strips, the folding sides, the
hinged end piece, which folds down` upon the bottom, in between the rigid side pieces, an end piece or pieces, and the hinged roof, `as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to produce a folding coop or kennel which, when no longer needed, can be folded'up and stored away in a very small space, and which can be transported more cheaply than coops of the same size which are constructed in the usual manner.
Figure l is a perspective of my coop ready for use. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, showing the slatted end pieces removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective showing a portion of the coop foldedtogether. Fig.` 4 shows the entire coop folded together for transportation. Fig. 5 shows an end piece to be placed in front of the slatted endpiece at night.
A represents the bottom4 piece of the coop, which is strengthened by the cleats B. Secured along opposite sides of the bottom piece, A, are the vertical rigid cleats C, to the upper edges of which the side pieces D are hinged. These rigid pieces C are used for the purpose of raising the point at which the side pieces D are hinged to a point above where the end piece E is hinged to the bottom. rlhe end piece E, which forms a permanent part of the coop, in contradistinction to the opposite removable end, is hinged to the rigid crosspiece E, which is secured upon the top of that end of the bottom. rlhis end piece is just wide enough to fit snugly between the 5o side cleats C when it is folded down upon .part of Letters Patent No. 294,600, dated March 4, 1884. nppncfnion nieu December 13,1883. (Model.)
`the top of the bottom A.- As ythe crosspiece E raises the lower end of the piece E above the bottom when the end is folded inward upon the bottom, it does not rest solidly upon the bottom, but extends horizontally above it just far' enough to allow the end piece H to be placed under it. The side cleats G raise the side .pieces D just high enough to allow them to close solidly down upon the end piece E after it is closed.v These side pieces D, being only half the width of the coop, just meet at the center and form an even solid package when all of the parts are folded together. Each one of these side pieces D is strengthened' by the vertical cleats J, so as to prevent them from warping or splitting.
rlhe roof K is formed upon each side of a number of pieces, which are secured rigidly their upper inner edges, and when folded together can be placed upon the other parts of the coop, as shown in Fig. 4.
In order to allow the poultry fresh air, the end F of the coop is made open, as shown in Fig. 1. This end piece will not be hinged to the bottom A, but will be'made to lift in and ont of the sides. In order 4to keep the lower ends of the end piece F in place, a block or stop, S, is secured upon the top of the end of the bottom, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. When the coop is to be closed at night, so as to keep out rats and snakes, the end` piece H will be placed in front. of the piece F, so as to close it at all points except its top, where open space is left for the purpose of allowing ventilation.
To fold the coop, the top is first removed, the end piece H yplacedupon the bottom, and then the end E is folded solidly down upon it. These two parts fill the space between the side cleats C. The sides D are then folded inward, as shown in Fig. 3, and the end piece F is placed upon their tops between the cleats J. lljhe folded top K is then placed upon the top of all the otherV parts.
As shown in Fig. 4, when the coop is folded together, it makes a solid and compact bundle, which occupies but little space, and which Ioo The een be transported from platee to plziee inneh C, an end pieee or pieces, and the hinged roo 1o more readily than an ordinary coop. Y, substantially as Shown and described.
Having t-llns described my invention, I In testimony Whereof aflixmysignaturein elaiinpresence of t-Wo Witnesses.
