A pair of strap irons 24 are secured at their inner ends on the top of the end bars of the cover or top 17. The outer end portions of these strap irons are disposed downwardly asV at 25 and terminate in the'laterally projecting tongues 26 in the manner clearly shown in Figure 1, and the purpose thereof will' be hereinaftermore fully described. Additional strap irons 27 at the sides of the top and the end portions of these strap irons are disposed downwardly as at 28. A clip like member 29 is carried by the under side of the top 17 at the intermediate portion of each of the side edges of the top. v In assembling the coop, the sides and ends are` swung upwardly to the position shown in Figure 1 so as to form a rectangular shaped coop and the top y17 is then placed on the upper edges of the sidesand ends so thatthe depending portions 28 of the strap irons 27 would engage .the uppermost strip 14 of the sides11and12 on the outer side faces vthereof and the intermediate clips 29 ywill fit over the intermediate portion of the v respective uppermost strip 14. rlhe depending portions 25Vof the strap irons 24 will be disposed adjacent the outer side of the uppermost strips of the end members 6 and 7 respectively, and adapted for cooperation with the laterally projecting tongues 26 are the pivoted locking bails or latches 30 which are carried by the end members 6 and 7. In this manner, the top 17 will rigidly secure and support the hinged end members and .sides in an upright position so that the coop will be properly assembled and ready for use, and the strap irons will prevent the accidental collapsing of the coop.

. When the coop is not in use, or whenever it is desired to fold or otherwise collapse the same in a compact manner, the latches 30 are disengaged from engagement with the laterally projecting tongues 26 andthe top 17 is then lifted upwardly soas to be entirely removed from engagement with the ends and sides. The end members 6 and 7 are then folded inwardly so as to swing downwardly and lie flat against the upper surface of thebase or bottom 2 of the coop. The side members 11 and 12 are then swung inwardly so as to also lie flat, and the same will be disposed over the infolded end mem- .bers m the manner clearly shown in Figure 3. The cover 17 is then placed on top of the vinfolded side members and for the purpose of holding the parts of the coop in their folded or collapsed posit-ion, I provide a pair of lugs 31 which project outwardly from one side of the top, the same being adapted for engagement with the apertured strap irons 32 which extend upwardly from the adjacent side bar 4 and the manner in which these lugs cooperate withA the strap irons 32 is more clearly shown in Figure 3. A similar strap iron 33 extends upwardly from the other side bar and a spring urged latch 34 which is carried by the other side portion of the top is adapted for engagement with the apertureformed in the upper portion o f the strap iron 33. The latch or bolt 34 may be retracted so as to be disengaged from the strap iron 33 through the medium of the handle 35 associated with the latch or bolt.

'When the parts are arranged in the manner yshown in Figure 3, a compact arrangement is afforded so asto permit the coop to be easily and readily'handled or transported without occupying any considerable amount ofspace. l

The simplicity in which my improved chicken coop is constructed enables the same to be readily-and easily assembled or disassembled.

While I have shown the preferred einbodiment of my invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape, and arrangen'ient of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A collapsible chicken coop comprising a bottom, side and end members hingedly secured at their lower edges to the bottom, and a separable top adapted to rest on the upper edges of the side and end members when the latter aredisposed in coop forming relation, cooperating means between the top and the side and end members for holding the coop in its assembled position, said means com-l prisingr strap irons secured to the upper side of the top, the outer end portions thereof being disposed downwardly for engagement with the outer faces of the respective side and end members, a substantially inverted -U-shaped spring clip secured to the underside of the top at the intermediate portion of each side edge thereof, said sprin clips adapted to engage over the upper e ges of the respective side members, the arms of each clip adapted to engage the outer and inner faces of the respective side members, and latching means associated with certain -of said strap irons for locking the top and the coop 1n an assembled position, said latching means comprising laterally projecting tongues formed on the depending portion of the end strap irons, and pivoted bails secured on the end members and adapted for enffagement with said tongues.
