intatta GIACOMO GERAC, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISANA.
COLLAESIBLE CRATE.
Application filed May 25,
y To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, GIACOMO Gunner, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Crates; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhe present invention relates to improvements in collapsible crates, for instance for poultry or merchandise requiring the circulation of air, and it is an object of the invention to provide an improved crate for this and like purposes which is capable of being collapsed into comparatively small compass to the end that it may take up but little transportation space and for this'reason be reshipped to the distributing point of the goods at a relatively low cost. n
Another object of the invention resides in providing improved means to hold the crate in set up position, which will permit its ready collapse and in further providing an improved device to hold the walls Aof the crate collapsed firmly and compactly against the bottom during reshipment.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
ln the drawings, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of an improved crate in set up position;
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the crate;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the crate in collapsed position;
F ig. 6 is an end view of the crate in the same condition; and
Fig. 7 is a plan view with the various walls and sections laid out.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a bottom for the crate b eing preferably of wood or some other solid material in order to form a continuous surface for supporting merchandise or for sustaining the feet of the poultry. Hingedly secured to the bottom 1, along one of its 1921. Serial No. 472,449.
edges as by staples 2, are the sides 3 and 4 preferably of a mesh structure. Associated with the sides are bars 5 and 6 also having a pivotal movement with respect to the bottom 1 and provided with perforations 7 and 8 in parts thereon which project beyond the free edges of the sides 3 and 4.
TEnd walls 9 and 10, also preferably of a mesh construction, are hingedly secured, as by the staples 11, to the bottom 1 along the remaining two edges thereof whereby tc form' with the sides an enclosed crate. Top sections .12 and 13 are hinged as by straps 14 and 15 to the free edges of the ends 9 and 10 and are adapted to swing down into parallel horizontal position with respect to the bottom 1, thus covering the crate. One of the top sections 13 is with advantage equipped with a door 16 to admit the hand for inserting and removing merchandise and this door may be provided with a cover if desired.
Lugs 17 and 18 have perforations 19 therein and are secured to the bottom 1 at right angles to the bars 5 and 6. A rod 2O is provided in conjunction with the crate having a crooked end21 to aord a hand hold and being at its other end 21 pointed and flattened and preferably having a perforation to receive a cross pin 22.
In use, the sides 3 and 4 are folded up* wardly at right angles to the base 1, as are also the ends 9 and 10. They thus form a horizontal enclosed space above the bottom 1 and it will be noted particularly from Fig. 1 that the sides 3 and 4 are set inwardly of the ends 9 and 10 to permit slots 23 and 24 on the top sections 12 and 13 to overlap and engage over the projecting perforated por tions 7 and 8 of the bars 5 and 6.
The top sections 12 and 13 hinge about the straps 1 4 and 15 and lie upon and are supported by the top edges of the sides 3 and 4. The pin 2O is passed through the perforations 7 and 8 in the bars 5 and 6 above the top sections and thus acts to hold the crate in the set up position. The cross pin 22 prevents withdrawal of the main pin 20.
For reshipment purposes the crate is folded in the manner shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and for this purpose the cross pin 22 is initially withdrawn and subsequently the main pin 20 is removed from the bars 5 and 6. The sides 3 and 4 are thereupon folded over towards one another and collapsed against the bottom 1. The ends 9 and 10 tospecifically described. embodiment ofI this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and' modifications be'- ing restricted only by the scope of the iollowing claim. l c
llfhat is claimed is: A. collapsible crate comprising a rectangular fiat bottom portion,1 side members hinged respectively near each edgeA of said bottom-portion, said side members .being or substantially identical height When swung to the vertical position, and being adapted when raised to form the four sides or a box, each of said members comprising a rectangular metal 'frame with Wire mesh secured thereto, a pair of oppositely disposed bars `rigidly secured to and extending vertically across one of the opposite pairs of side members, and projecting above same when said members are in the raised position, said bars being provided with eyes near their free ends, a pair or' top members hinged respectively to the tops of the other pair of side members, and adapted lwhen the corresponding side members are raised to overlap at their i'ree ends and to form a top Yfor the crate, said top members being also provided `with a metal frame and Wire mesh mounted therein7 andthe overlapping portions of said mesh being perforated to svvlng over the proj ectingends of said bars, and a transvvversely disposed securing rod adapted to pass across the top of said crate when in set- Vup condition and throughv said eyes and to lock all the top and side members together.
