COLLAPSIBLE CHICKEN-COOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1915.
Application filed August 25, 1913. Serial N 0. 786,564.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE GENTRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attalla, in the county of Etowah and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Collapsible Chicken-Coop; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improved collapsible chicken coop.
An object of the invention is to provide a coop of this nature, which may be easily knocked down, or folded in a small compass for shipment, and one which comprises desirable and practical features of construe tion.
One of the features of the construction is the provision of means for not only holding the coop opened and in readiness for use, but for holding the same folded or collapsed equally as wel Another feature of the invention is that the hinged sides or ends fold in such wise as to permit of the reception of a metal feed and water pan, the top of the coop, when the same is collapsed or folded, prevents upward displacement of the pan.
Another feature of the invention is the particular manner of hinging the foldable or collapsible parts.
In practical fields the details of construcion may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the improved foldable chicken coop open in condition for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the foldable coop collapsed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the improved coop showing the sides and ends folded.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 designates the bottom of the improved coop. This bottom comprises the ottom piece 2 and the side and end flanges 3 and 4, Which flanges overlap one another at the corners of the coop, as shown at 5, there being metal corner pieces 6, to render the connections secure, as shown. These flanges rise a little above the bottom piece 2- The side flanges 3 have strips 7 secured adacent thereto, and to the bottom piece 2. The foldable sides 8 comprise the rectangular frames which consist of the bars 9 and 10 overlapping one another at the corners and secured together in any suitable manner, the overlapping construction being denoted by the numeral 11. Each side 8 is provided with mesh work 12, and one of the pieces of mesh work is provided with a metal frame 13, having a metal and mesh work door 14 hinged at 15, there being a suitable padlock 16 for holding the door locked. The bars 9 and 10 are braced relative to one another by the strips of metal 17.
The foldable end parts 19 consist of the bars20 and 21 connected in a manner similar to the connections of the bars 9 and 10, but not particularly shown. The bars 20 and 21 are braced relative to one another by the metal strips 22, and are provided with mesh work 23.
The lower edges of the sides are provided with grooves 24 receiving the rods 25, which are held in place by the staples 26. These rods 25 are constructed with angular ends or portions 27, which are mounted in staples 28 of the end flanges 4. In this manner the sides are pivotally connected in place. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 4 that the sides 8 are alined above and with the strips 7.
The lower edges of the end parts are provided with grooves 29 receiving the rods 30, which are held in the grooves by the staples 31. The ends of the rods 30 are mounted in recesses or bearings 31 of the side flanges 7. In this manner the end parts are hingedly connected in place, the lower edges of the end parts engage the bottom piece 2 of the coop, as shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the end parts first fold inwardly adjacent the bottom piece 2, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, while the sides fold upon the end parts, as particularly shown in Fig. 6.
The top 32 of the coop comprises the top piece 33 and the flanges 34 which overlap one another at the corners as shown at 35, there being metal corner pieces 36 to render the connections secure. The flanges 34 extend partially down upon the outside of the side and end parts, when the coop is in condition for use, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4'. However, when the coop is collapsed or folded, the top 32 covers the folded siderand end parts, while the flanges 3d assume positions adjacent the flanges 3 and 4.
The bars 21 of the end parts are provided with openings or bores 37, which-receive the the same winged nuts are received by Y the b01ts38; so-as to hold thepart'sof thecoop in a collapsed'relation. When the coop is collapsed the winged nuts 40 are countersunk inthe recesses 42 of the bottom. The top is-constructed with an opening3 having an area of mesh work M coveringthe same.
When-the side parts are folded, as shown in Fig. (i'a space 4:5 between theadjaccnt ed es of the side parts 8 is formed, for the regeptionof the metal feed and water pan 46. When the parts are folded as shown-in Fig: 6-with the pan 46 in place, the top may thenbe-placedin-position as show-nin Fig.
2, and in this manner displacement of the pan-46 is prevented.
It'is tobe understood that this improved foldable or collapsible coop may be constructed of any suitable material, wood or other'fiber, or metal or the like.
The inventor is well aware that foldable chicken coops have been conceivedand constructed priorto the present invention, thereforethe patentee is not claiming the broad construction: But as will be noted the inventor is particularly claiming the; essential-features-of loosely and slidably connecting the side and end the bottomof the coop, the hinged rods of Copies ot thisspatent may be olitained'for parts of the coop tothe sid'eparts being formed with angular endsandsecuredby staples (which pass or arch over the angular ends) to the end flanges. adjacent the side parts or side flanges of the coop as specifically and definitely. defined in the appended claim. 7
The invention having been set forth, what is-claimed as -new=a-nd useful is t A foldable chicken coop comprising a bottom having, side and end flanges, the side flanges having" strips. arranged adjacent thereto, side and=endi parts; each comprising an open frame havingsan area of meslr work thereover and provided with corner reinforcingjmetal members, the side and endpartshaving longitudinal grooves in their' lower"edges, rodsi arranged in the grooves of the said parts; staples" arching the rods andbridging the grooves to loosely and slidably connect the said parts to the rods, the rodsinthe grooves of theside-partshaving angled. ends, staples arching the angledi ends and'conn'ected to said endfianges for holding the rods of the side partsinplace and against longitudinal movement, the" rods carried by the end parts being mounted in bearings-of said' strips and positioned adjacent the inner faces of the end flanges, the
end partsbeing foldable inwardly adjacent 7 the bottom whereas the side parts are fold-- able ontheend'parts, a top mernber for-the coop,- bolts passing' through the endpartsand the top to hold the structure of the coop:
in readiness for use, sai-d bolts when the sideand end parts arefolded and thetop covering 'the same; adapted topass through the bottom adjacent the lower edges'of theend .partsand the end flangesandithroug-h the top to hold tllGStT-HCUH'G collapsed.
Intestimony whereof I have signed my name-to this=specification in= the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
