Application filed. March 27, 1915. Serial No. 17.480.
7 '0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Ennnn'r E. O. WELTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eastland, in the county of Eastland and State. of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chicken-Coops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in folding chicken coops. 4
The object of the present inventlon is to improve the construction of chicken coops and to provide a simple, inexpensive and practical chicken coop of strong and durable construction, capable of being compactly folded for shipping or storing and adapted to be easily and quickly arranged for use.
IVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of constructlon may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advan tages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan View of the folding chicken coop constructed in accordance with this invention, and shown arranged for use, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the chicken coop, Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the coop partly folded, Fig. 5 is a side elevation the parts being arranged as shown in Fig. 4, Fig. {3 is a side View showing the parts folded, Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view illustrating the manner of securing the members of the coop together.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the folding chicken coop comprises in its construction a bottom 1, side walls 2, end walls 3 and a top wall 4. The bottom or floor which may be constructed of any suitable material is composed of two sections 5 and 6 connected together by a longitudinally disposed centrally arranged pintle rod 7 passing through registering eyes 8 of the sections 5 and 6 same together to permit the said sections to fold compactly as hereafter fully explained.
The central pintlerod 7 is provided with terminal eyes 9 forming to prevent longitudinal pintle rod with respect to the eyes and also constituting pins for securing the members of the crate in their position for use. The section 5 of the bottom is also provided at its outer edge with eyes 10 in which is arranged a pintle rod 11 constituting the lower side rod of the adjacent side wall of the coop andhinging the'bottom to such side wall as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of thedrawings.
outer edge with eyes 12 in which is arranged the outer rod 13 having terminal eyes 14. The side walls 2 which may be of any preferred construction preferably consist of wires or rods extending vertically and horizontally as shown and suitably connected at their points of intersection. The end walls which are also preferably constructed of Wire or similar material are composed of two sections 15 hinged together at their adjacent portions by a central vertical pintle rod 16 and also hinged at their outer portions to the side walls by outer corner pintle rods 17. The hinged sections of the end walls are adapted to break or fold inwardly as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings to permit the chicken. coop to collapse laterally. The top 4. of the chicken coop is also composed of longitudinally disposed sections 18 hinged together at their adjacent portions by a central longitudinal pintle rod 19. One of the sections 18 of the top of the chicken coop is provided at its outer edge with eyes 20 which are arranged on the top rod or wire of the adjacent side wall of the chicken coop whereby the top is hinged to the said side wall.
The other section of the top of the coop is provided at its outer edge with a rod 21 having terminal eyes 22 and the central pintle rod 19 is also provided with eyes 23. The central pintle rod 16 and the corner rod 17 at the ends of the coop are provided at their lower terminals with eyes 24 and 25 which are adapted to be passed through the eyes 9 and 14 of the central and side rods 7 and 13 of the bottom of the coop and the said eyes are secured together by pins .26 and 27 which pass through the eyes 24:
and .hinging the heads and adapted movement of the The other longitudinal section of the bottom is provided at its 1 said eyes 30 and 31. Any other suitable and whereby the sides and end walls are rigidly connected to the bottom and the latter is rigidly held against the lower edges of the said wall. The top of the coop is secured to the side and end walls by pins 28 and 29 passmg through eyes 30 and 31- of the central pintle rods 16 and the corner rod 17. The eyes 30 and 31 are passed through the eyes 23' and 22 respectively after which the pins are passed through the means may be employed for securing the members of the crate in their operative posit1on to form a rigid coop or crate.
. ing to the shipper or other purpose. The
top of the chicken coop is provided with a suitable door 32 which may be of any desired construction and which may also be scribed includin arranged at any preferred point. Although I the improvements are shown applied to a folding coop it will be apparent that they are also applicable to var ous other forms of shipping crates or packages.

A folding receptacle of the class deside walls, end walls hinged to the si e walls and composed of hinged sections collapsible inwardly, a foldable bottom composed of hinged sections and connected to one of the side walls, a foldable top composed of sections and connected to the other side wall, and interfitting eyes carried by the top, bottom, side and end walls and adapted to receive fastening means for securing the partsin position for use. i
2. A folding receptacle of the class described including a bottom composed of sections, 3, pintle rodconnecting the sections and provided with eyes, sidewalls, end walls hinged to the side walls and composed of sections, vertical pintle rods connecting. the sections of the end walls-and vnecting the two sections and provided with eyes arranged to extend through theseyes of the pintle rod of the bottom, fastening means for securing the sa1d eyes together, and a foldable top.
3. A folding receptacle of the class described includmg a bottom divided longitudmally into two sections, a pintle rod conrovided with terminal eyes; a side rod carried by one of the sections of the bottom and located at the outer edge thereof, said side rod being provided with terminal eyes, side walls, one of the side walls being hinged to the other section of the bottom at the outer edge thereof, end walls composed of sections, central and corner pintle rods hinging the sections together and to the side walls and provided with eyes arranged to pxtend through the eyes of the bottom and adapted to receive fastening means, and a top.
I 4. A folding receptacle of the class described includlng side walls, end walls composed of hinged sections, and having intermediate and corner pintle rods provided witheyes, a top composed of hinged sections and provided with pintle rods having eyes arranged to receive the said eyes, fastening means for securing the said eyes together and a bottom.
5.
