To all whom 'it may concern Be it lrnown that I, ORIN C. FnNLAsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoquiam, in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Collapsible Veneer Box, of which the following is a specification.
rIhe invention relates to improvements in collapsible veneer boxes.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of collapsible veneer boxes, and to provide a simple, strong and efiicient4 telescope box having a flat bottom to adapt it particularly for shipping merchandise by parcel post, and capable of being easily and quickly arranged for use and of being locked in such position for rigidly holding the box together.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box of this character adapted to be shipped in a flat lrnoclrdown or folded condition, thereby enabling the box to be shipped at a much lower rate than boxes made up or incapable of such compact foldmg.
It is also an object of the inventionto provide a collapsible veneer box having a flat bottom composed of crossed strips of veneer, each providing a plurality of plies or thicknesses to form practically a tight bottom box.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a collapsible veneer box, and cover, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 isia perspective view of the box, the cover'being removed and one corner of the box being broken away to illustrate more clearly'the arrangement of the bottom strip. Figs. 3 and t are perspective views, illustrating the manner of folding the collapsible box. Fig. 5 is a similar view, the box being-folded substantially fiat: Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a collapsible veneer box provided with a pair of bottom strips, the body of the box collapsible rectangular body l consisting of a single sheet or strip of veneer of sufcient length to form the four walls ofthe body and to provide overlapping terminals. A strip or sheet of veneer is scored at the corners of the box, an extension 2 being provided at one end of the strip or sheet to overlap the other end portion, which is of sufficient length to form one of the side walls of the box. The overlapped ends of the strip or sheet are pierced by the sides or legs of inclined staples 3, preferably two in number and located near the upper and lower edges of the body portion, but any number of staples may be employed and the terminals of the strip or sheet may be .secured together in any other suitable manner, if desired. The scoring of the veneer at the corners of the box enables the body to collapse or fold perfectly flat for shipping or storing.
` The box is equipped with a foldable strip t scored at intervals to provide a terminal attaching portion 5, a lower or outer bottom portion 6, outer and. inner side embracing portions 7 and 8 and an inner or upper bottom portion 9, located at the free terminal of the strip and adapted to be interlocked with the body, as hereinafter fully explained. rl`he terminal attaching portion is secured by staples 10 to the outer face of one of the side walls of the body, preferably the wall "adjacent to the extension 2, as clearly'illustrated in F ig. 2 of the drawings, and itpreferably has its upper` edge ar ranged in flush relation with the upper edge of the contiguous side wall and it extends downwardly below the lower edge of the same and is of a width slightly less'th'anthe length of the said side wall to form a side wall of two plies or thicknesses. TheV lower or outer bottom portion 6 extends across the bodyto the opposite side wall thereof, which is arranged between and is embraced by the portions 7 and 8. In arranging the box for use, the collapse ible body portion is swung outwardly from over the folded strip, and the latterY is uni,142,os4
folded. The body portion is opened out into true rectangular shape with the outer bottom portion 6 extending across the bot- "toni'of the said body portion. The outer side embracing portion 7 is then swung upwardly against thev exterior of the adjacent side of the body portion 1 and the inner side embracing portion is folded downwardly within the same, carrying withitr the inner or` upper bottom portion 9, which is pressed downwardly within the box and tucked under and engaged with the edge of the body portion. This rigidly locks the kparts in position for use. The innerand outer side engaging andV embracing portions' friction-V ally clamp the contiguous sidewall of the Vbody between them and they form with the same a side wall of three pli/es or thicknesses. The inner and .outer bottom forming portions 6 and Qprovide a flat bottomof two plies or thicknesses, which adapt the box particularly .for shipping .merchandiseV by parcel post. -The arrangement of the bottom forming strip 0n the collapsed bodyin this manner provides a strong and durable structure as the wall of two Yplies or thicknesses at one'side and the opposite ywall of three plies or thicknesses and a connecting bottom port-ion of three plies or thicknesses. When, however,it is desiredv to'construct a box with a practically tight bottom, `a pair of bottom strips 15 may be employed. The bottom strips 15 are scored at intervals and are of a length to form an' a'ttachingi'terminal portion 16, and a lower or outerV bottom forming portion17, outer and inner-side embracing portions 18 Tand 19 and an inner or upper bottom forming portion 20. When the collapsible 4rectangular body portion 21 is collapsed, as illustrated in Figf6 of the Y drawings, the bottom` forming strips are arranged 1n parallelism and the opening movement of the body portion 21 carries the strips to' positions at right angles to each other.
