SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,398, dated June 12, 1883.

Be it known that I, GEORGE S. KNAPP, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Folding Camp-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a strong and inexpensive chair, which may be folded into a very compact form, which shall be strong and rigid when in use, and which shall aflord a good support for the back.

To this end it consists in a series of legs crossed and connected by pivots and peculiar plates adapted to sustain the seat, and in a hinged back sustained by flexible straps, as hereinafter explained.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my chair in position for use; Fig. 2, a similar view of the same as it appears when closed or folded; Fig. 3, a top plan view of the joint by which the back is sustained; Fig. 4, a perspective view of one of the corner-pieces.

A represents the frame of the chair B, the flexible detachable seat; 0, the hinged back, and D the braces or straps by which the back is sustained. j

The frame consists of four similar pairs of legs, a and b. Each pair consists of two duplicate legs crossed at the center and united by a horizontal pivot, c. The four pairs are arranged in planes forming the respective sides of a square, and the upper and lower ends of each pair are united to the corresponding ends of the adjacent pairs by means of angular corner-plates d and horizontal pivots c, as plainly represented. The frame thus constructed may be extended, as in Fig. 1, in the form of a hollow square, with the lower endsof the legs resting upon the floor or it may be closed together in the compact form represented in Fig. 2. Each of the metallic corner-pieces has its sides or leaves connected by an intermediate web or plate having a hole or opening, f,

therein to receive the corners of the seat.

The seat B is made of canvas or strong webbing, preferably of two strips crossed and sewed together, and at each of the four corners it is provided with a strong hook, g. The seat is applied by engaging the hooks in the respective corner-pieces at the top of the frame, and when thus attached it is securely sustained by the frame, while at the same time it serves to hold the frame from spreading, and keep the same at the proper height.

The back consists of an arm or stick, (3, pivoted at its lower end between two plates, 2', which are secured to the upper ends of two adjoining legs by means of the pivots which hold said legs to the intermediate corner-piece. Being thus applied, the back may be turned downward against the legs or upward above the seat in position to support the back of the occupant. sition by means of two straps, D, extending from its upper end forward to the upper ends of the side legs, as shown.

When the chair is extended for use the legs hold the braces in such position that they give the back a firm support; but as the frame is closed the braces are slackenedso that the back may swing downward.

The braces may be connected to the legs and the back by metalplates or ears, as shown, or in any other suitable manner.

It is obvious that the method of hinging and sustaining the back may be used in conneotion with folding legs arranged in any manner which will enable them to lighten and slacken the straps as they are opened and closed.

I am aware that folding legs have been jointed together and combined with folding backs and seats in various ways, and my invention is therefore limited to the peculiar construction herein shown.

The present invention is restricted to those matters and things which are hereinafter claimed, and as to all matters which may be described or sh own, but which are not claimed, the right is reserved to make the same the subject of a separate application. Neither do I claim herein, or as part of the present invention, .any feature or combination of features described or shown in my application for Letters Patent for a No. 66,762.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a folding chair, the combination of the following members: the series of crossed and connected legs a b, the back arm, 0, the angleplates d, and plates 1' z, uniting one of said angle-plates with arm 0, the flexible seat, and the flexible supports of arm 0, substantially as described and shown.
