COMBINATION DAVENPORT, BED, AND TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatented Nov. 2, 1920.
Application filed July 19, 1918. Serial No. 245,618.
To all w 710m it may concern Be it known that I, KAsoL JENorowsKr, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Combination Davenports, Beds, and Tables, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to improvements in an article of furniture, and more particu larly to the class of sofabeds, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a combination sofa, bed and table.
It is the objectof the invention to pro duce a device of this character of such construction, that when arranged to form a sofa or davenport, there will be nothing in its appearance to indicate, that it is convertible into a bed and a table.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a table which is so arranged that it can be conveniently and quickly set up when the furniture is to be used as a table, the leg portions of the table being constructed to rest in their working position upon the side rests of the sofa and for concealment below the plate of the table when the same is not in use while the plate can be hidden when not in use behind the back rest of the sofa or bed. i
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of an article of furniture of this character, which is simple in its construction, neat and attractive in appearance, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purposes, strong, durable and readily and easily convertible into a sofa, bed or table, and also one which is inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination with a sofa frame and its seat of a folding frame for a spring and mattress adapted to be stored underneath the seat of the sofa when not in use, and means such as guides, parts and hinges for concealing the frame from view when the furniture is used as a sofa. The legs of the frame being conveniently folded against the sides of the frame when not in use. The invention furthermore consists inthe arrangement of the table slidable in suitable guides at the rear of the foldable crown of the sofas back rest, the construction allowing a tilting of this crown toward the front and the sliding of the table along its guides over the seat whereby the legs of the table find a support in the side rests of the sofa, while they are in their state of rest conveniently concealed underneath the table plate.
The connecting means of the parts of the furniture are so constructed and arranged as to operate the spring and mattress support, the seat and front rail underneath the same, and the crown of the back of the sofa and the table, and to support the frame and the table when swung into their respectwo operating positions, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a front view of the combination sofa, bed and table constructed in accordance with the present invention, the furniture being shown as a sofa.
Fig. 2 is an end eleva ion thereof.
Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, partly in section showing the table plate at the rear of the back rest and the seat of the sofa (in dotted lines) folded against the front of the back rest, and the spring and mattress frame in its extended position.
Fig. 42 is a detail view of the spring and mattress frame in its folded position underneath the seat of the sofa.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the furniture when used as a table with the legs of the table resting in suitable sockets in the side rests of the sofa.
Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5, and v Fig. 7 is a detail view of a stop limiting the sliding motion of the table toward the front.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the combination sofa 10 comprises the customary frame 11 resting on legs 12 and provided with side rests 13, back 14,. front rail 15, and seat 16. The crown 17 of the back rest 14 is hinged to the same as indicated at 18, so that it can be folded toward the front of the sofa. The seat 16 is hingedly secured, as shown at 19, to a strip 20 se cured to, or integral with the back so that the seat can be folded against the front side of said back 14:.
To the inner sides of the back 1 1 and the front rail 15, strips 23 are conveniently secured, adapted to support a folding frame 24 for supporting the bed spring and mattress which are of the customary folding kind.
The frame 24 consists of a. flanged rear part 25 and a front part 26 connected by lateral or side rails 27, 27 made in two parts connected intermediate the ends of the rails 27 by means of hinges 28, 23, and below said hinges within suitable depressions of the rails cross-bars 29, 29 flush with the underside of the frame are provided one of which rests upon the front strip 23 when the frame is folded underneath the seat 16 of the sofa 10 with its front part 30 resting upon its rear part 31, said front part being conveniently shorter than said rear part 31. (in the. inner faces of the side rails 27, 27 at their forward extremities, legs 32, 32 are suitably located, adapted to be folded against said side rails when not in use while the frame is folded underneath the seat, and to be swung into supporting position if the frame is unfolded to support a spring or mattress and allowing the use of the furniture as a bed. To the rear of the foldable crown 17 cleats 33 arranged in pairs are suitably secured and adapted to form guideways 34. The table 35 consists of the customary plate 36 provided at its underside near its ends with transverse strips 37, 37 adapted to slide within the guideways 34 of the folded crown when it-is desired to use the furniture as a table. Suitable stops 38, 38 at the rear ends of the strips 37, 37 serve to limit the forward sliding movement of the plate within the guideways 34, 34. Extensions 39, 39 are hinged at both ends to the plate and are adapted to be folded against the upper side of the plate when the table is not in use. On the underside of the plate, near the front edges thereof, brackets 40, 40 are secured, to which are pivotally connected the upper ends of the legs 41, 41 adapted to be folded upon the lower face of the table plate between the shanks of said brackets when the table is not in use with its underside resting against the rear side of the back 14. Near the lower edge of said side of the back a supporting strip 42 is provided adapted to be engaged by a similar supporting strip 43 secured to the underside of the table plate when the same is in its position of rest.
The operation of converting the device from a sofa or davenport to a bed or table and vice versa, will be readily understood from the drawings, in connection with the foregoing description, and it will be noted, that when the device is in its normal position, or condition, 71. e. in sofa form, the spring or mattress frame will be folded and disposed horizontally underneath the seat with the legs folded against the inner sides of the side rails, while the table is concealed behind the back rest of the sofa, resting with its strip 43 upon the supporting strip 42 of the back 14, and held on top with its transversal strips 37, 37 within the guideways 34, and its legs 41, 41 folded against the under side of the plate between the shanks of the brackets 40, 40. r
When it is desired to use the furniture as a bed, the seat 16 is raised and leaned against the back 14, in which position it may be secured by any suitable well known means such as hooks or the like. The folding part 30 is then unfolded from its part 31, after the panel 22 has been swung downwardly around its hinges. Thenthe legs 32, 32 are folded down to rest with their lower ends upon the floor, and the frame will be ready for the reception of any folding spring or mattress of proper dimensions.
When it is desired to make use of the furniture as a table, the crown 17 of the back rest 14 is folded toward the front and the plate 36 ca now slide within the guideways 34 toward the front until this movement is limited by the stops 38, 33. Then .the legs are unfolded and their lower ends which are diminished to form pins 44 are introduced into suitable and conveniently arranged holes 45 in the upper face of the side rests 13.
it will be noted that in its position of rest against the rear of the back rest, the table by its weight will hold the crown 17 in vertical position and will prevent its tilting toward the front.
From the foregoing the operations for folding the mattress frame and for bringing the table back into its position of rest so as to give the furniture again the appearance of a sofa will be clearly understood without further description.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 In a sofa-bed of the character described, the combination with a frame, comprising a front rail, a back, and recessed side rests, a crown hingcdly connected to said back and adapted to fold upon said side rests, shoulders on said crown providing dove-tail. grooves, a table plate, transversal strips of dove-tail cross section on the under side of said table plate adapted to engage with and slide in the grooves of said crown, legs pivotally secured to said table plate and adapted to engage with their reduced free ends the recesses in said side rests, if the plate is to be used as a table, means for limiting the sliding movement of said table plate and means for supporting and holding said table plate in its position of rest in engagement with said back, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature.
