2 means for the actual insertion of books in the same so that its purpose maybe twofold,
while at the same time producing a structure which will etficiently meet the requirements of both a bookcase and a bed. 7
' Still another andfurther important object of this invention is the provision, in a fold ing bed or the like, of means for a double folding of the bed and its contained springs,
' mattresses and the like with a minimum expenditure of time, trouble, and inconvem ience.
Another and still further importantobject of thisinvention is to provide, in a combination piece of furniture for a living room or the like, a bookcase and a bed which is economical of manufacture, simple of construction, and therefore readily operated.

Theinvention, ina preferred form, is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
7 In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the improved combination book case and folding bed of this invention, showing the samefin closed position.
Figure 2, is a side elevation showing the bed opened out, and with the operation disclosed in dotted lines. 1
Figure 3 is aview somewhat similar to Figure 2, illus of the invention.
Figure 4 is a detail view of the spring employed in the bed, showing the special construction used in the folding over arrangement. I r
beds, and has for one I trating a slight modification -As shown in 'tlievdrawings :v
The'reference numeral 10 indicates generally a caseffor the combined folding bed and book rack of this invention, which, shown, can be made of any desired material and numerous designs. -Rollers '12 are pref erably provided in the bottom thereofgsothat One of the particular objectsofthis in the same may be readily moved fron'i'place to place. v s V i A Atthe top of thel'case IOis provided a series of doors 14 preferably having glass '16 therein, these doors being mounted to covera shelfor series-of. shelves adapted to contain books orthe like. Larger doors-18 are provided over the lower a'ndl-arger portion ;of theistructure behind which the folding bed is concealed (when the device isnot in use as abed, v a As shown in Figure 2,. the bed structure itself comprises rails 20 and 22, foldably mounted with'respect to each other by means of-alspring'hinge or the like 24L-1Adj'acent the hinge 'Qfh-lS a pair oflegs 26 which; act to support the middle of the bed when in open position, these legs having mounted at the upper end thereof abra'cket 28 into which is inserted corresponding projections 30 of the bed rai1's2O and 22. A bracket inthe form of a pivoted lever 32 supp-ortsthe legs 26, and 7 this racket may be swung about its pivotal point3 l asshown by the dotted lines in Figure 2 so that the legs 2 6;may-be folded back] vunder the'bed'whennot in use. i I The-outer and forward f edge of the bed comprising the rails 22is likewise supported by'foldable-legs, as shown zit-.36, mountedon a pivoted bracket-38, and the. heardrof the bed 40 is fold-able downwardly andrearwardly as shown by the dotted lines. V
Ahook member 42 is provided attliispoint '7 for connection with acorr'espending pin 44 atthe rear, end of the rails 22, so that the'b'ed itself may be locked in jifolded position for fstowing away in the body of the case 10.
a A foldable 'spring, as shown at 46, is adapted to be used with this modification of'the bed, this spring being formed in two portions connectedadjacent the center of the bed by means of a series of coiled springs a8,
whereby the same can be readily folded in conjunction with the bed rails 22.
For box springs a slightly different construction is provided as shown in Figure 3, the box spring itself as at 50 being hinged or jointed in the middle as shown at 52, adapted for a folding over uponitself as illustrated in the dotted lines in this figure. When this folding has beenaccomplished-the rails 54 and 56 of the bed are telescoped into each other by simply sliding the "forward rails 56 rearwardly, a pin 58 being provided to pre-v vent any undue forward motion of the rails V 56. The legs 60 are; then foldedunderthe bed rails in the same manner as described in connection with Figure 2, anda suitable lock member inthe form of anadjustabl-e pivoted hook or the like.62 is provided at the rear of the M11354 in order that the mattress may be properly maintained in folded relation. An adjustable strap 64! is also provided for the maintenance of the pillowsjblankets, etc., when the bed is to be folded.
It will be seen that herein is provided a folding bed or the like which constitutesv an ornamental and useful adjunctto anyliving room in additionto comprising an-economical and useful pieceof furniture. The opera-- tion is extremelysimple, andthere is no danger of accidental folding while the-bed is occupied. The device as shown comprises a suitable double bed,'but obviously may be inade in other sizes, as desired. V
' Ve are aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of'constructi'on 7 varied throughout a wlde range wlthout de-' parting from the principles of this invention, and wetherefore do'not purposelimiting the patent granted thereon "otherwise than as necessitated by. the prior art. 7
