To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY I. HoLDnRNEss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Crib Attachment for Beds, of which the following is a specilicationl The invention relates to improvements in crib attachments for beds.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of crib attachments for beds and to provide a simple and' comparatively inexpensive one, which will be capable of easy operation to fold and arrange it beneath a bed in order to be out of the way in the daytime when it is not in use, and which may be readily arranged at one side of the bed and level with the same to form practicallyacontinuation of the bed. A

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective view of a crib attachment constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a bed, the crib being in operative position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 isa similar view, the crib attachment being folded beneath the bed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the spring-catches.

1 designates transverse boxes or ways secured to slats 2 of a bed, open at their inner faces and front. ends and provided at their said inner faces with longitudinal flanges 3. The ways 1 receive and form guides for sliding track-bars 4, which are constructed substantially the same as the ways, with the eX ception of being closed at both their front and rear ends, and the said track-bars receive rollers 5 of slides 6, the rollers being arranged within the hollow track-bars and being retainedtherein by the longitudinal flanges 7 thereof,which engage the grooves. The ways or guides and the sliding track-bars are each composed of a vertical back wall and a horiarranged in pairs and which form legs for the crib when the latter is elevated, as illustrated in Figs. 1'and 2 of the accompanying drawings. The link-'bars 9, which are arranged in pairs, are pivoted at their lower ends to the slides 6 and at their upper ends to the body portion of the crib, and when the latter is notin use it is adapted to be swung outward and downward to arrange itin the plane below the bottom of the bed, so that it can slide under the same in order to be out of the way when not in use. After the crib has been swung downward and outward the slides and the sliding track-bars are moved inward to carry the crib beneath the bed, so as to arrange it out of the way.

The crib comprises a body portion, a flatouter side rail 10, and folding end rails 11, which are secured to the side railbyl hooks and eyes when the crib is in use. The side rail is hinged to the body of the crib at a point below the hinges of the end rails, and in folding it is adapted to swing inward between the end rails',`which are then folded down upon the side rail.

The rails of the slides are grooved, as shown, and receive the anges 7 of the sliding trackbars, and the latter when drawn outward are locked against further outward movement by a spring-catch 12, secured to one of the Ways at the bottom thereof and consisting, preferably, of a flat spring provided with a projection or nib extending upward from the spring in position for .engaging a notch 13 of the adjacent sliding track-bar`. The slides are secured by means of a similar spring-catch 14, mounted at the top of one of the sliding trackbars and consisting of an attachment plate or portion, and the flat spring provided with a depending nib or projection engaging a notch 15 of the'adjacent slide 6.

The crib is held in its elevatedposition by a hook 16, hinged to one of the slides and engaging an eye 17 of the body portion of the crib; but the hook and the catches 12 .and le may be doubled, if desired, and arranged at each end of the crib.

Each sliding track-bar is supported at its IOO outer end when in operative position by a folding leg 18, connected at its' upper end to the outer face of the sliding track-bar by a slot-and-pin connection 19 and adapted to engage a horizontal staple 2O when in operative position and to iit in a vertical staple 21 when it is arranged horizontally or is folded. The horizontal staple is disposed directly above the pin which connects the leg to the sliding track-bar, and the leg is adapted to move downward to disengage it from the staple 21, and in folding is swung upward to a horizontal position to iit its lower end in the staple 21.

It will be seen that the crib attachment is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is easily manipulated, and that it is adapted to be readily arranged at one side of a bed level with the same to form an extension thereof or to be folded beneath the bed, so as to be out of the way when it is not in use. It will also be seen that when it is folded beneath the bed it is arranged to permit free ventilation in order to avoid any dampness, and that it may be readily applied to any ordinary bed without mai-ring the same or necessitating lany alteration in the construction thereof.

Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Vhat I claim isl. In a device of the class described, the combination of the hollow transverse ways open at their inner faces and front ends, the hollow track-bars slidingly mounted in the ways, slides provided with rollers mounted in the hollow track-bars, a folding crib, linkbars connecting the folding crib to the slides, and means for securing the parts in operative position, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the -class described, the combination with a bed, of the hollow transverse guides each secured to a slat of the bed, hollow track-bars slidingly mounted in the guides, slides provided with rollers arranged -in the track-bars, a folding crib, link-bars connecting the folding crib to the slides, and

` spring-catches arranged to engage one of the track-bars and one of the slides, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination of suitable guides, sliding trackbars mounted therein, slides arranged 011 the track-bars, a folding crib comprising a body portion, a hinged side and end rails, the hinges being arranged at the inner faces of said rails, at the bottom edges thereof and located at different elevations to permit the same to fold inward upon the body portion, and means for securing the crib in its operative position, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination of the transverse guides open at their inner faces and ends and composed of vertical back walls and horizontal top and bottom walls and provided with longitudinal flanges mounted on the top and bottom walls, the sliding track-bars composed of vertical back walls and horizontal top and bottom walls and provided with longitudinal flanges, slides provided with groove drawers arranged between the flanges of the sliding track-bars, a folding crib, link-bars connecting the crib with the slide, a fastening device mounted on one of the sides after engaging the crib, and catches mounted, respectively, on one of the guides and on one of the track-bars and adapted to engage the adjacent track-bar and slide, substantially as described.
