FOLDING BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,212, dated May 20, 1890.

Application filed September 25, 1889. Serial No. 825,013. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AXEL EDWARD J AOOB- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of \Vinnebago and State of IVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Folding Bed, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in folding beds; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bed folded. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it extended for use. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the spring and its connection with the bedstead, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line as x of Fig. 2.

In carrying out my invention I employ a frame A, having the back B and the sides 0, as shown, and to the sides, at the lower ends of the same, I secure the doors D D, which are adapted to fold together and close the lower part of the frame when the bed is raised, as shown in Fig. 1. The side rails E of the bedstead are pivoted to the sides 0 of the frame A, and to the said side rails I secure the wardrobe-front F, the lower edge of which when the bed is raised rests upon the upper edges of the doors D D, so that the bedstead will be prevented from prematurely lowering, and can only be lowered after the said doors have been opened.

To the side rails E, I secure the blocks G, adapted to pass through cut-away portions g in the sides of the frame, and to the bottom edges of the side rails I hinge the legs or supports II at h, which are adapted to impinge at their upper ends against these blocks when the bed is lowered, so as to support the same, and which when the bed is raised strike the edges of the sides of the frame, and thus prevent the bed from passing too far thereunto, and also form a part of the ornamental molding at the upper end of the bed.

\Vithin sockets J, pivoted to the frame A at the sides of the same, I secure the upper ends of the rods I, the lower ends of which project loosely through the tubes J, swiveled on the side rails of the bedstead at the inner ends of the same. Expansive springs K are arranged around the rods I between the tubes J and pins L, which secure the sockets J upon the upper ends of the rods, and the pressure of these springs serves in a degree to balance the weight of the bed, so that the bed can be easily raised and lowered.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have providedafolding bed which is simple in its construction, and which when lowered will be strong and steady, and which when raised will occupy but very little room. The device presents a very neat appearance when raised, and can be easily and quickly raised and lowered. The springs eifectually balance the bed, while the tubes swiveled'to the side rails of the bedstead permit the same to turn without materially increasing the strain on the rods. The tension of the springs can be increased or diminished, according to the necessities of the case, by inserting the pins L through higher or lower transverse registering openings J 2 in the rods I and sockets J, as will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. The combination of the frame, the bedstead pivoted therein, the tubes swiveled on the side rails of the bedstead, the sockets pivoted within the frame and having a number of lateral openings, the rods having apertures near one end and their bodies passing loosely through said tubes, the pins engaging said openings and apertures, for the purpose described, and the eXpansible springs coiled on said rods between said tubes and pins, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the frame and the bedstead pivoted therein,of theblocks secured to the sides of the latter above their lower corners, and the legs H, hinged between their ends to said lower corners and adaptedto turn beneath the same, their upper ends resting beneath said blocks when open and striking the sides of the frame when closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
