win-MAM Hf. SCHWALBE, or New YORK, N. Y.
` `IIIMPRO'VIEID SOFA. .AND BEDSTEAD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all'whomit may concern;- l e e Be it known that I, WnmIAMlH. SCHWALBE, of
, 4New York, inthe county of New York, and State of New York, have invented` a new and useful Improvement in Combined Sofa and Bed and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, andV exact dey scription thereof, which will. enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had `to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this` specification;
Y Figure l is a vertical section ,of my combined sofa and bed opened out.` c
Figln'e 2 is a vertical section of the same closed. Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the sam e, taken through the line x x, fig. 1. i A
' My inventipn has for its object to improvethe con-.
struction of combnedsofasand beds, so as to make .them more convenient .in use, and so as to better `adapt them for use in the various places in which they may be required and e `It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts `of the device, as-hereiuafter-more A i's theupper part of` the sofa, towhich the arms B are attached, and which is hinged `at lits forward edge to the forward edge ofthe middle part C, to which the legs D of thesofa are attached;
One side of the part A is upholstered, to serve as a seat for the sofa, audits other side is upholstered, to
E is a frame, the lower part of which is hinged to therear edge of the par-t0,4 and `which is Vmade of 'such a length that, whenjraised into a vertical position, it
may4 pass between the rear ends of the arms B, and
rest against the edge of the part A.
To the rear side ofthe upper edge of the frame E are attached the slide-hinges F and G. i y The middle hinge Fmis designed to be made strong,'
so as to mainlysustain the` strain, and its forward strap is securely attached tothe frame E.
The-ibrwardstraps of` the side hinges-G slide in `ways attached to said frame E, where their movement is limited by a screw passing through --slots-in said straps, as shown in fig. 3. flhis allows the top edge of th frame E to be made curved if desired. e
The frame E should be upholstered, to serve as the `back of the sofa or as the head-part of the bottom.
To the other straps ofthe hinges F Gare attached, or npon them are formed, cross-heads or plates, which enter and slide in ways or dovetailed grooves in the `back Il, as shown in iigs. 1, 2, and 3, so that, bydrawing the parts A C 4forward, the upper end of the frame .E will slide down upon theyback H, ailowingsaid back to retain its vertical position, and serve as 4an endboard to the bed. f When the frame -E is lowered into a horizontal position, it is secured in place by the hooks I, `which are pivoted to` the lower part of, the back H, and which hook into staples attached to the' saidframe E, as
shown in iig. l. e When required orl convenient, as, for instance, 1n steamboat saluons, the back H may be a permanent in which the cross-heads of the hingesF G slide may be formed in the said partition.
` When folded up to l'serve as a sofa, the various parts are secured to each other by screws, J, passing in through the back H and screwing intothe arms B. or
back H, as may be most convenient, reference being had to the construction ofthe combined sofa and bed in each case eachother, so as to fold together in such a way as not Ato displace the springs or other upholstering. .l
The parts of the frame K are hinged at their hinged Iedges to the forward part ofthe central part G of the maybe folded together, and folded down into the in terior of the part C, so as not to interfere with the folding or'closing of the hinged part A. of the-sofa or bed.-
When required for use, the frame K is opened, out as shown -in fig. 1, the one part resting upon the frame of thepart A, and the other par-t of said frameKrest ing upon the bars L, which are pivotedtothe frame of the part O near its corners, in such away that their Ffree ends may be swung outto cross the angles or corners ofthe ii'ame of the, part C, for the corners of the said part of frame K torest upon.
Then not required for use in supporting the frame `K, the bars L are'swung into recesses in the frame ofthe said part (l, so as to be entirely out of the way.
Having thus described my invention,
Patente 1. The frame K, make in two parts, hinged to each other, and to. the parts G of the sofa andbed, in combination with' the hinged partsA G of the said sofa and bed, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth. v
- 2. The hingedframe E, in combination with hinged and folding parts C A, andl with the vertical back H,
part of the partition, or, in other words, the grooves passing through the arms B and screwing Iinto thev K is a flame, which is made in two parts, hinged to' sofa and bed, as shown in gs. 1 and 2, so that they I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters whether said back be made solid with or separate
