SPECIFICATION formingpart Of Letters Patent N0. 274,467, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed January 10, 1883. (No modelJ To all whom "it may concern 7 Be it known that I, CHARLES S. GOMINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Concord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Folding Cribs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to substitute for the ordinary hinged side rail commonly' to the corner posts, forming part of the head and foot board of e crib.
I will here refer to the drawings, of which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary folding crib provided with my improved side rail. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a folding crib provided with my improved side rail, showing a different form of construction from that shown in Fig. 1, and having therein the bed and bedding. I
In the improved side rail, A, is provided an opening, commencing at the foot-board and extending twelve inches (more or less) toward the head-board, so formed by means of a bend made in the top piece, A, which maybe madeas shown in Fig. IV of the drawings, (said bend being known to the trade as an ogee curve or 'it may be more of a right-angle bend, and one end of said piece A terminate at or be mortised into the top of the piece of the side rail, as shown in Fig. 2. The opening thus formed in the side rail afi'ords a handy and easy exit, and also retains for a child the same protection against falling out as do the side rails when made of a uniform height from end to end, and as no hinges are used and less wood is required the improved side rail can be applied to folding cribs at less cost than can those in common use. The bond made'in the piece A should be such as to bring the lowest part of the side rail, A, flush or nearly flush with the bedding, or else constructed as shown in Fig. 2.

what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The combination, with a folding crib, of the wooden side rail,A,composedof the bent piece A and the piece B, separated by vertical slats so arranged for the purpose of lorming in said side rail the space 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein described and set forth.
