FOLDING CRIB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,134, dated J'une 12, 188?.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES S. CoMINs, acitizen of the United'States, and a resident of Concord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Folding Cribs; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the same. i

The object in view is to so construct a folding crib as that it may be more convenient and easy of regression or egression for a child, and less trouble for those having the care of an infant to place it either within or to take it from said crib than is experienced in using the ordinary folding crib.

This invention relates only to the side rail of a folding crib; and the nature of the im provement will be clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures, of which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a folding crib provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1, showing the style of folding crib to which this improvement is designed to be applied. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a folding crib, showing my improved side rail in another form of construction. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the folding crib part way closed. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan of the improved side rail, which shows two parts of the same united by a dovetail tenon.

The top part of the improved side rail shown in Fig. l of the drawings is composed of three pieces, the straight pieces A and 0 being rigidly fastened,-respectively, to the head and foot post of the crib. These pieces are purposely out too short to reach the entire distance from the head to the footboard, and the center piece, B, is therefore provided for the double purpose of connecting the piece A with the piece C, and for providing an offset from the horizontal piece A to the horizontal piece 0, thus allowing the piece C to be mortised into the foot-post at a point considerably lower than the point at which the piece A is mortiscd to the headpost, the exact distance that the one may be lower than the other being determined by the length of curve or angle given to the piece B, which may vary somewhat according to ones tastesay eight inches, more or less. The pieces A, B, and C may be connected by dow els D, as shown in Fig. 1; or they may be joined eye; or even a straight piece maybe used, running vertically from the piece A to the piece 0; or it may be a straight piece of wood placed on an angle of forty-five degrees, or thereabout; or the pieces A and C may be made perfectly round and left long enough to overlap one another, in connection with which round vertical slats connecting the top with the bottom of the side rail may be used, one of which will pass through that end of the piece C which is nearest the center of the crib and terminate in the corresponding end of the piece A, this form of construction being shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

It will be readily seen that either of these forms of construction will leave a portion of the side rails considerably lower than the remainder, or will form an opening or space, I, near the foot-board, and thus accomplish the object of this invention hereinbefore mentioned.

Figs. 2 and 4 illustrate the particular style of folding crib to which I design to apply my improvement. The head-board E and the foot-board E are each shown to be composed of two parts, joined in the center by the hinges H, the outer edges of said parts E E being so fastened by hinges H to the corner-posts as to permit their folding in between the side rails, as shown in Fig. 4.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- The combination, with the folding crib herein described, of the improved side rail, the top part of which is formed of two or more pieces, one of which may be curved, and joined together by means of dowels or dovetailed tenons, substantially as shown, that end which is secured to the footpost being eight inches (more or less) lower than is the end secured to the head-post, for the-purpose of forming an open space, as described and set forth.
