Description

ISTVAN KERTESZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BED.
Application filed April 17, 1913.
T 0 all whom/2'15 may concern Be it known that I, IsTvAN KnR'rnsZ, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to beds, and the objects of my invention are to provide a metallic bed that can be easily knocked down and packed to occupy a comparatively small space when not in use, in storage or during shipment, and to provide a collapsible bed consisting of comparatively few parts that are inexpensive to manufacture, durable, easy to assemble and highly efiicient for the purposes for which they are intended.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawin wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bed, Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of a portion of the bed, partly broken away and partly in section, and 8 is a longitudinal sectional view of a connection forming part of one of the rails of the bed.
The head piece of the bed is made in two sections, each section comprising a post 1, a lower transverse bar 2 and an upper transverse bar 3, the lower and upper bars being connected by vertical rods l. The upper transverse l ars 3 have their confronting ends connected by an inverted U-shaped strap 5 and one of the lower transverse frames 2 has a reduced end 6 extending into a socket 7 provided therefor in the other lower transverse frame, which is provided with a set screw 8 for engaging the reduced end 6 to lock the lower transverse bars 2 together. The innermost rods 4 have piv- Specification of Letters Patent.

oted hooks 9 engaging in staples or eyes 10, and these hooks cooperate with the fasten.- ing means of the bars 2 and 3, in holding the sections of the head piece together.
The foot piece of the bed is generally designated 11 and is constructed upon the same principle as the head piece. The posts of the head and foot pieces have apertured lugs 12 and detachably mounted between said lugs by pins 13 are the ends of rails 1d. The rails 1d are made in sections and the sections are connected together by sleeves 15, held in position by set screws 16.
The sectional rails can be disassembled and the sections packed together to form a small parcel. The sections of the head and foot pieces can also be disassembled, whereby the complete bed will occupy a comparatively small space when collapsed.
lVhat I claim is A bed comprising head and foot pieces, each piece formed of two sections, each section consisting of a post, upper and lower transverse bars projecting from the post and vertical rods connecting the bars together, the lower bar of one section of each piece extending into the lower bar of the other section of each piece, and means for connecting said lower bars together, coupling means for connecting the upper bar of a section of one piece to the upper bar of the other section of said piece, means for connecting the innermost rod of the section of one foot piece to the innermost rod of the section of the other foot piece, and rails connecting the posts to said head and foot pieces.
In testimony whereof l atlix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ISTVi-XN KERTESZ.
