UNITED STATEST PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES MAIIER, OF MEDINA, NEVV YORK.
. BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,253, dated December 31, 1895.
Application filed October 24, 1895.
To all whom/- t may con/cern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES MAHER, of Medina, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads g and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-letters marked thereon.
My present invention has for its object to provide certain improvements in bedsteads, and particularly the sides or side rails thereof, whereby an efficient fender is formed for preventing children from falling out of bed, and also whereby the sides or edges of the bedclothes may be clamped to the bed for preventing the occupant from throwing them od at night; and to these ends it consists in certain improvements in construction and combinations of parts7 all as will be hereinafter fully described and the novel features pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a bedstead, showing my improvements; Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig.' l; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4:, an enlarged sectional view of the form of the catch employed.
Similar reference-letters in the several figures indicate similar parts.
The head and foot boards of the bedstead to which my invention is applied may be of any suitable construction, the parts being connected in the usual or any suitable inanner. Upon the top of the side rail A is a supplemental rail B having secured to its under side three or more rods or guide-pins C slid ing in suitable apert ures, preferably provided with tubular sockets or sleeves C', as shown particularly in Fig. 3, in which said guiderods operate. These rods are provided pref erably near their lower ends with recesses or transverse slots a., which, when the supplemental rail B is raised to the position in dotted lines, are adapted to co-operate with spring-operated catch-plates E, as shown particularly in Fig. 4, said catch-plates being preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal guided by suitable loops or eyes b and Serial No. 566,757. (No model.)
' encircled by a spring o, one end of which coA operates with one of the loops b and the other engaging a small projection CZ formed on the catch-plate, and also an ear or projection e, formed on said plate. The tendency of the spring is to press the catches to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, the projections e then engaging with the small notch a, located near the lower ends of the rods C. The ends of the catch-plates are connected preferably by a cord F, guided in suitable staples f, as shown.
. The operation will now be understood. When it is desired to elevate the supplemental rail, it may be drawn up to the position in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and retained in this position by the ears e of thel catches automatically engaging the notches ain the rods, or, if desired, the bed-clothes may be passed out between the main and supplemental rails and the latter brought down upon them, thereby effectually preventing the occupant of the bed from kicking off the clothes.
As stated, the supplemental rail may be maintained in upper position by the catches, and by grasping the cord and withdrawing both of the latter it may be allowed to fall to normal position.
The supplemental rail forms an ornamental top for the main side rail, and if the de- Vice is made in a workmanlike manner the difference between my side rail and the usual one would not be noticed, and by reason of the connection between the two catches the operator can conveniently disengage them both at once and lower it from the center.
I claim as my invention-A-a l. The combination with a side=rail for bedsteads having the vertical sockets therein, of the movable supplemental rail, the depending rods connected thereto operating in the sockets and having the notches, and the catches on the inner side of the main rail engaging the notches in the rods, said supplemental rail normally resting upon the main rail, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a side-rail for bedsteads having the vertical sockets therein, of the movable supplemental rail, the depending rods connected thereto operating in the sockets and having the notches, and the two catches arranged in the inner side of the main IOO side rail, having springs for causing their composed of the plates having; the projection automatic engagement, and connections bee, the spring and the loops I), substantially as 1o tween said catches for operating them snnnldescribed. taneously7 substantially as described,
3. The combination with a sde-ra foilbed- CHAS MAHER steads having the sockets and the supplemen- VitneSSeS: tal top1'ail thereon, of the rod attached to the JOHN MAHER,
latter having the notch a., the spring-catch R. E. MAHER.
