MATTREss-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,884, dated February 26, 1901.
Application filed June 14, 1900. Serial No- 20,26'7- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HATTIE L. ROMAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bed-Spring-Frame Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for bedspring frames; and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved construction of spring-actuated mattress-clamp for bedspring frames whereby a mattress or section of mattress supported thereon may be re tained against slipping from its proper position, to construct said mattress-clamp in a simple and inexpensive form and admit of its being readily attached at desired intervals to a mattress or bed-spring frame, and to produce other improvements the details of construction of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of one of the end bars of a bed-spring frame, showing one of my improved mattressclamps thereon; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing the clamping member of the device in engagement with a mattress.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts in both views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a mattress-clamping attachment which consists of two plate sections or members 1 and 2, the plate-section 1 having its upper and inner side provided with laterally-projecting lugs 3, one of which projects from the central portion of said plate and the remaining two of which are arranged to project from points near the ends of the plate. The clamping member 2 is also provided on its outer edge portion with projecting hinge-lugs 4., which, as indicated in the drawings, are adapted to bear against sides of the lugs 23. These platelugs 3 and 4 are hinged together through the medium of a hinge-pin 5, which extends loosely through openings in said lugs. Coiled upon the pin 5 between the pairs of lugs 3 3 are springs 6, one end of each of said springs extending outward, as indicated at 6, and
being secured to a lug 7 on the inner face of the clamping member 2 and the remaining end thereof extending downward and engaging the inner face of the plate 1. As indicated in the drawings, the outer side or edge portion of the clamping member 2 is formed with the desired number of downwardly-bent clam ping teeth or fingers 8.
In utilizing my invention the plate or section 1 is, as indicated in the drawings, secured vertically to the outer side of a bedspring frame-bar 9, the influence of the springs 6 being such as to press the plate or member 2 toward the top of said frame-bar.
The end or side portions of a mattress such as is indicated at 10, which ordinarily extend over the upper face of the frame-bar 9, are adapted to be securely retained in this position by raising the clamping members until the mattress is in its proper position, and then allowing said clamping members to drop, through action of their springs, into engagement with said mattress, this construction being shown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
WVhile the plate-section 1 is in the present drawings shown to be practically of an equal height with the bar 9, it is obvious that where my improved clamping devices are employed on the side rails of a bed-spring frame and the mattress is supported on the usual bedspring above said rail the clamping member 2 may be elevated to the desired height by an increase in height of the plate 1. It will be observed that any desired number of these clamping devices may be employed and that the plate portions 1 thereof may be readily screwed or otherwise similarly secured to the outer sides of either the end or side framepieces of a bed-spring frame.
By the employment of my improved clamps it is obvious that the mattress or mattresssections which are supported upon the bedsprings may be retained against an undesirable slipping movement thereon and that said clamp will be particularly useful where a horizontal bed-spring, such as those formed of woven wire, is employed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a mattress-clamping attachment for bedspring frames the combination with a bed spring frame, of a plate 1 adapted to be rigidly connected With the outer side of the bedspring frame, a clamping member 2 formed with downwardly-curved clamping-fingers at its out-er edge, said clamping member having a hinge connection with said plate 1 and springs surrounding the hinge-pin, said spring eX erting a downward influence on said clamping-section 2, substantially as specified.
