WILLIAM F. ADE, OF WILLIAMSPOR-T, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPRING-BED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. ADE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Villiamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Spring-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spring beds and the object of my invention is to furnish a means whereby the slats of a spring mattress may be adjusted so as to lock in the bed frame and thus do away with the noises due to movements of ill fitting mattresses against the framework of the bed.
In United States Patent No. 851,911 issued to me on April 30, 1907, a spring mattress with metallic slats is shown, and my present invention is particularly adapted for use with slats of the kind shown and described in this patent, it will be understood, however, that I do not desire to confine myself to the use of my present invention in connection wit-h slats of any particular form as it will be evident that its application may be general.
Hy invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views: Figure 1, being a side elevation of a spring mattress with metallic slats; Fig. 2, a plan of two slats with springs the same forming one unit of a mattress as set forth in my patent above referred to, the slats at their ends being furnished with my adjustable means, at one end the adjustable head piece being removed from the slats; Fig. 3, an end view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the adjustable end piece.
a are the bed slats which are preferably, but not necessarily, formed of channel shaped metallic strips. For purposes of convenience in shipping and handling the mattress is formed of a number of strips a'arranged in pairs, each pair of slats with their springs forming one unit of the mattress. The springs b are double, opposite sides of the snring being fastened the one to one slat and the other to the other slat of the pair of slats.
To the ends of the slats are secured head pieces 0 which are adjustable lengthwise of the slats, the slats being made a trifle shorter than the length of the bed frame (or Specification of Letters Patent.

width of the bed frame if they are to extend from side to side of the bed instead of from head to foot).
Bed frames, both metal and wood, are usually more or less carelessly madeand frames of so called standard lengths or widths vary in dimensions slightly, it is to compensate for this that my head pieces 0 are adjustable in order that a perfect fit may be made. Adjustability is preferably given by having the head piece furnished with slots d and the slats Z), or a flat piece of metal 6 riveted to the slats, with threaded holes f, or vice versa, through which passes a thumb screw 9, or equivalent device, by means of which the head piece, after having been adjusted so as to bring the clips h firmly against the rail 2', is firmly locked to the slats.
The clip h is carried by the inner side of the head pieces and depends therefrom and is adapted to engage the inner side of the head and foot rail, or the side rails, i as shown in Fig. 1. When the head piece is properly set the clips lock the slats securely to the rail and the mattress is to all intents an integral part of the bed but can be in stantly removed by slacking the nuts g.
In the drawings the head pieces extend only from one to another of a pair of slats, they can, of course, extend completely across all of the slats and be furnished with any desired number of clips it.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. The combination with the slats of a spring mattress of head pieces adapted to rest upon the top of the end or side rails of a bed, clips carried by said head pieces adapted to engage the inner sides of said rails, and means for adjustably securing said head pieces to said slats.
2. In a spring bed bottom, in' combination, a series of channel shaped metallic slats, flat metal plates secured to and projecting out from the ends of said slats, head pieces adapted to lie upon the tops of the end or side rails of a bed, a clip carried by said head pieces adapted to engage the inner side of the rail, and means for adjustably securing said head pieces to said metal plates.
