FOLDING BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,343, dated March '7, 1905.

To will whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN G. PEACE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Micanopy, in the county of Alachua, in the State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement on the folding bed shown in Letters Patent issued to me January 1, 1887, No. 356,010.

The present improvement is for means for retaining the bed-bottom frame in folded position.

The invention consists in features of novelty. hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Figure I is a perspective view of one end of my bed in folded position. Fig. II is an enlarged perspective view showing the end portion of the bed seen in Fig. I looking at the opposite side. Fig. III is an enlarged sec tion taken on line III III, Fig. I, with parts adjacent to said line in elevation.

1 designates the posts of the bed, which, as seen in Fig. II, are supported by transverse foot-pieces 2, secured thereto. The posts 1 are united by an upright cross-tie 3. The bedbottom frame consists of side rails 4 and end rails 5, the latterof which are swingingly connected to the posts 1 by pivots 6. (See Fig. I.)

7 is one of a pair of drop-legs pivoted to the bed-bottom-frame side rail I, that is lowermost when the frame is in folded position and is the farthest removed from the bed-posts when the frame is in unfolded position, or, in other words, positioned horizontally, as illustrated by dotted lines, Fig. I.

8 designates a catch-bar that is secured to cross-tie 3 at one of its ends adjacent to the post 1 at that end. This catch-bar is provided with an upwardly-projecting lug 9, that is at 12 to the bed-frame end rail 5 and is adapt-- ed for movement to and engagement with the catch-bar lug 9 when the bed-bottom frame is moved into upright folded position. The catch-hook 11 is conlined by a staple 13, that is seated in the end rail 5 in front of the pivot 12 and while permitting free movement of the catch-hook prevents it from descending to a greater extent than is suflicient for the hook to engage the catch-lug 9, so that the hook will always engage said lug and ride thereover when the bed-bottom frame is moved into folded position.

I claim as my invention In a folding bed, the combination of a pair of vertical posts, a cross-tie uniting said posts, a pair of transverse foot-pieces, a bed-bottom frame pivoted to said posts and having an end rail, a latch pivoted to said end rail, a staple inclosing said latch for limiting the movement thereof, a catch-bar secured on the upper edge of said cross-tie and having a free end provided with a downwardly-projecting hook engaging the side face of said foot-piece, and a lug on said catch-bar to receive the engagement of said latch, substantially as set forth.
