BEDSTEAD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY W. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved bedstead. especially designed for the use of bedridden persons.

The object of the invention is to provide a metal bedstead with the mattress so supported as to permit it to swing in all directions and to spring up and down with a gentle motion accompanying each movement of the person occupying the bed.

l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bedstead constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof partly in section; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of a portion of one of the side rails showing the locking means for holding the bed stationary.

In the embodiment illustrated a metal bed is shown composed of the usual head board 1 and foot board 2 each having the usual posts as 3. The posts of these head and foot boards are preferably provided with brack- I ets as 4 having upwardly extending angular studs as 5 which are adapted to fit in correspondingly shaped recesses or sockets in the side members 6 to hold them reliably in position and prevent wabbling thereof.

Preferably cast on the posts as 3 of the head and foot board are bracket members 7 to form supports for the bed. Any desired number of these supports may be used, four being shown. An ordinary woven wire spring 8 is shown provided at its opposite corners with upwardly projecting apertured lugs as 9 which are connected with the brackets 7 by means of strong coiled springs as 10 which yieldably support the mattress spring Specification of Letters Patent.

8 and permit it to move laterally and longitudinally and also to have an up and down motion to permit the bed to swing gently with each movement of the person occupying it and which renders it especially agreeable to invalids. The spring Sis also preferably provided at its opposite ends with upwardly projecting plates or flanges as 11 which form guides for the mattress and prevent longitudinal movement thereof. These guides preferably extend across the entire width of the bed.

The side members of the spring 8 are preferably provided with sliding catches as 12 for fastening the spring to the head and foot board when it is desired to prevent swinging movement thereof." These catches are preferably made in the form shown in Fig. 4 comprising a bar 13 slidably mounted in keepers as 14 arranged on the lower faces of said side members of the mattress spring and are bifurcated at their outer ends to form post engaging clamps as 15. The arms of these clamps are preferably provided with rubber or other suitable coverings to prevent scratching of the posts and rattling of the catches thereagainst. These bars 13 are preferably provided with notches as 16 adapted to be engaged by a catch spring as 17 to hold the bars in projected position. This spring 17 is also designed to bear against the bar 13 and hold it reliably in withdrawn position with the prongs or clamps 15 thereof out of engagement with the posts and this spring is preferably provided with a finger piece 18 for operating it.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantagesof the invention, as defined in the appended claims.

I claim as my inve11tion:

1. A bedstead having a mattress support, means for connecting said support with said bedstead to permit said support to swing latorally and to move vertically and means constructed. to lock said mattress against lateral movement and to permit it to move vertically.
