UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL ARGERBRIGHT, OF TROY, OHIO.
FOLDINGBEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 433,845, dated August 5, 1890.
Application filed July 27, 1889.?v -Serial No. 318,868. (No model.)
Y Improvements in Folding Bedsteads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of the bedstead. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3.is a front view. Fig. 4 is a back view. Fig. 5 is a detail, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing more fully the weights fand their adj ustability.
This invention relates to certain irnprove` ments in convertible or folding beds, combining therewith a dressing-case and a wardrobe or book-case; and to these ends the nature of the invention consists of the novel combination'of parts and their construction,
' as will appear from the following description and illustration. j
In the embodiment of my invention I employ two sections A A', one A being the wardrobe, or it may be a book-case, the other section A being the bed, having a dressing-case. In the lower part of the wardrobe-section is a cam-bracketor casting c, suitably bolted in place, and which-is provided with a rack or teeth a', oitset from which but of the same casting is a plate d2, having a slt d3 straight the greater portion of its length and curved downward at its ends.
B is a spring suitably secured to the inner side of the wardrobe-section A and having its free or upper end bearing or pressing against the forward or inner corner edge of the cam or casting a, as shown. This arrangement of parts is duplicated at the opposite inner side of the wardrobe-section A.
The bed-section A has applied or connected to its outer sides at the inner or head end, by means of screws or other suitable fastenings, sector-shaped toothed castings b, which engage the teeth c of the casting or cam c. The sector-shaped toothed castings b have guide-pins c projecting 'therefrom through the slots a3 of the offset plates c2 to prevent the accidental disconnection of the said sector-shaped castings I) from the teeth or racks d. The guide-pins or projections c are let into the slots c3 of the plates d2 through the vertical slots or openings c4 in said plates, said vertical slots or openings connecting with said slots. The toothed sections b and the racks or teeth c give to the movable or folding-bed section an extended bearing or fulcrum as it is raised andl lowered, preventing the slipping or sliding of the bed-section when manipulated or moved to its vertical and hori- Zontal positions.
The folding-bed section A is provided upon its sides at the extreme inner or head end with anti-frictional rolls or wheels d, which, it will be seen, as the said bed-section` is lowered and raised, travel along the face 0f the cam-bracket d, and between the latter and the springs B, snapping past said springs, and caused to bear upon the upper horizontal surfaces or shouldersz' of said cam-brackets just as the legs of the foot end of the bedsection touch the floor; also, just as the rollers clarepassing the ends of the cam-bracket c, the teeth or cogs of the tooth-sections b will become disengaged from the teeth of the racks c, the last tooth of each toothed section b resting on the smooth ledge of the bracket d, and the pressure of the springs upon said rollers will shove or slide the loweredbed-section rearward, said movement being arrested. by the engagement of the last tooth of each toothsection b with the stopse of said brackets. The frictional rollers now having been lodged upon the top-surfaces of ,the cam-brackets, the parts will be automatically locked together. This firmly secures the two sections in position against the accidental folding of the sections, however much pressure or Weight may be exerted upon the head end of the bed or other part thereof.
To the inner or head end of the bed-section is adj ustably applied a weight or weights f, the same being slotted and. held or secured in place by a set or adjusting screw or screws f passing through said slot and engaging the head end of the bed-section.
It will be observed that in order to fold the parts or convert the same into another use it is only necessary to push inward upon the bed-section, pressing the rolls d against the springs b and then give it a slight lift, the weight f then acting to automatically carry the bed-section to its vertical folded position.
It will be observed that this invention is convertible also into abook-case, the upright or wardrobe-section forming a closure and having for the latter purpose a horizontal board or shelf g and doors in the rear. For ventilation the top and bottom of the closure, as also the shelf, are provided with apertures.
The bed or folding section has upon its under side or front a basin-stand h and a mirror h to provide for its conversion into a dressing-case, the said section in that case being folded or disposed in an upright position, so that the dressing-case appears in front.
It will be understood that the bedstead may be constructed with or without the wardrobe or book-case.
A latchZ is provided in connection with the stationary casing to engage the roller d on the movable bed portion. This latch is made in hook form, and is pivoted atthe bend of the hook to the lower portion of the stationary casing, as shown. A wire extends upward from the long arm of the latch-hook l to the short arm of a hub-shaft t in the upper part of the casing. When the bed portion is folded up, the latch-hook engages the rollercatch automatically, so that the two parts are held together and the danger of any casual falling of the bed portion is avoided. 4When the bed is to be unfolded, the knob is turned suiiciently to disengage the hook-latch from the roller.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination of the wardrobe-section and the bed-section, the wardrobe-section having a rack or tooth casting provided with a stop at an interval from and rearward of its teeth and with a cam-bracket having a con- Vex forward edge and a horizontal upper edge 'L' below said rack, a spring bearing against the upper forward edge of said bracket, the bed-section having a tooth-sector engaging said toothed casting or rack arranged below said tooth-sector, and means whereby the bed-section is adapted as it is lowered and raised to engage and press the spring :tlwty from said bracket, substantially as speci- 2. The combination of the wardrobe and bed sections, the wardrobe section having racks each provided with an offset, segmentally-slotted portions, and stops at an interval from and rearward of their teeth, cam-brackets having a convex forward edge below said racks and a horizontal upper edge, springs bearing against the upper forward edge of said brackets or cams, the bed-section having tooth-sectors engaging the racks which are arranged below said tooth-sectors, guide-pins projecting from said sectors and engaging the slots of the offset portions of said racks, and frictional rolls applied to the forward end of said bed-section and pressing or throwing said springs away from said cams or brackets, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the wardrobe and bed sections, the wardrobe section having racks each provided with an oifset, segmentally-slotted portions, and stops at an interval from and rearward of the teeth of said racks, the cam brackets having convex forward edges and arranged below said racks, springs bearing against the upper forward edges of said brackets and adjustable weights applied to the forwardr end of said bed-section, the bed-section having tooth-sectors engaging the racks, 'which are arranged below said tooth-sectors, guide-pins projecting from said sectors and engaging the slots of the offset portions of said racks, and frictional rolls applied to said bed section and pressing or throwing the springs awayfrom said calnbrackets, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the wardrobe and bed sections, the wardrobe-section provided with racks, cam-brackets having convex forward edges below said racks, springs bearing against said cam-brackets at their upper forward edges, the bed section having` frictional rolls engaging and pressing said springs away from said cam-brackets, and tooth-sectors arranged above and engaging said racks, having stops limiting the rearward sliding movement of said bed-section when in its lowered position and arranged at an interval from and rearward of the teeth of said racks, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I'afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL ARGERBRIGHT.
