CONVERTIBLE COUCH AND BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed October 24, 1905. Serial No. 284,203.
To all w/wm, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE WILLIAMS,
I a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ames, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Convertible Couches and Beds; and I declare the following to be afull, clear,
and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a par-t of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a davenport, showing my invention in dotted lines as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the back and seat reversed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the positions assumed by the parts in releasing the latch de- Fig. 4 is a view similar to Figs. 1 and as a bed.
The invention has relation to couches or beds having folding sections, and has for its object the provision of improved means of simple character for adjusting and rigidly securing the adjustment of said sections.
\Vith this object in, view the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates the base of the couch, having side frame-rails a,
b the seat, and c the back of the couch. The
seat I) is hinged to the back at cl, and said parts have connection with the base-frame by means of fulcrum-links e, pivoted at their upper ends to the pivot-rod of the hinge connection of seat and back and pivoted at their lower ends to the frame-rails a.
, f designates inclined brace-bars at each side of the lower portion of the back of the couch pivoted at their lower ends to the base-frame and at their upper ends to the inner portion of such back, said bars having a rearward bracing inclination from top to bottom.
9 designates inclined brace and latch bars pivoted at their upper ends to the seat of the couch at each side and having notches g at their lower or free ends for engagement with latch-pins h, projecting inward from the baserails a. Latch-releasing devices 1' are pivoted to these rails just below the latch-pins of the base.
Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings show the back 0 in raised position to form a couch or sofa, this back being about on a line with the rear The back and seat are thus rig-. idly braced against movement by the bracebars f and latch and brace-bars. 9 until the bars 9 are released from engagement with the latch-pins.
The back and seat of the couch are interchangeable for use as seat and back, respectively, upon release of the latch devices and rest upon the base and the seat raised to form a back, the latch devices being reengaged, as aforesaid, to fix the parts in position as adjusted. At the same time the latch and brace-bars g are caused to assume a rearward bracing inclination from top to bottom similar to the inclination of the brace-bars f in the reversed positions of the parts. In this posi tion of the parts when it is desired to convert the article of furniture into a bed the back is first moved slightly forward or toward the seat, which raises the latch and brace bars 9 from .engagement with the latch pins, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, and in full lines, Fig. 3 The pivoted latch-releasing devices, which are weighted at their lower ends and normally assume a vertical position, will then automatically turn in under the lower ends of such latch-bars, and upon rearward movement of the back 0 said bars will be lowered into contact with the latches i, and upon further rearward movement of the back, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3 will be pushed outward away from and out of engagement with the latch-pins, so that the back of the couch can be lowered into horizontal position upon the base-frame level with the seat.
It will be noted that each fulcrum-link e and the brace-bars f and g at each side are similarly angularly disposed with relation to each other in both horizontal and upright positions of either the seat or back member when the other member is in the reversed posit-ion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a convertible couch and bed, the combination of a base-frame, a seat member, a back member, the edge of which meets that of said seat member, a hinge connection between said members at the meeting edges thereof, a laterally-movable fulcrum-link connection between the pivotrod of the hinge and the base-frame, a brace-bar pivoted to one of said members at one end and to the base-frame at its other end, and a brace-bar pivoted to the other of said members at one end and having a detachable latch connection with the base-frame at its other end, either of said brace-bars having a rearward bracing inclination from top to bottom when the member to which it is connected is in upright position.
- 2. In a convertible couch and bed, the combination of a base-frame, a seat member, a back member, ahinge connection between said members, a laterally-movable fulcrumlink connection between the hinge andthe base-frame, a brace-bar pivoted to one of said members at one end and to the base frame at the other end, and a brace-bar pivoted to the other of said members at one end and having a detachable latch connection with the base-frame at its other end.
3. In a convertible couch and bed, the combination of a base-frame, a seat member, a back member, a hinge connection between said members, a laterally-movable fulcrumlink connection between the hinge and the base-frame, a brace'bar pivoted at one end to the inner portion of one of said members and to the base-frame at its other end, and a brace-bar pivoted at one end to the inner portion of the other of said members and having a detachable latch connection with the baseframe at the other end.
4. In a convertible couch and bed, the combination of a base-frame, a seat member, a back member, a hinge connection between said members, a laterally-movable fulcrumlink connection between the hinge and the base-frame, a brace-bar pivoted at one end to one of said members and to the base-frame at its other end, a brace-bar pivoted at one end to the other of said members and having a detachable latch connection with the baseframe at its other end, either of said bracebars having a rearward bracing inclination from the top to the bottom end thereof, when the member to which it is connected is in upright position.
5. In a convertible couch and bed, the combination of a base-frame, a seat member, a back member, a hinge connection between said. members, a laterally-movable fulcrumlink connection between the hinge and the base-frame, a brace-bar pivoted at one end to one of said members and to the base-frame at its other end, a brace-bar pivoted at one end to the other of said members and having a detachable latch connection with the baseframe at its other end, said fulcrum-link connection and said brace-bars being similarly angularly disposed with relation to each other in both horizontal and upright positions of either member when the other member is in the reverse position.
6. In a convertible couch and bed, the combination of a base-frame having a latchpin, a seat member, a back member, a hinge connection between said members, a laterally-movable fulcrum-link connection between the binge and the base-frame, a bracebar pivoted to one of said members at one end and to the base-frame at the other end, a brace-bar pivoted to, the other of said members at one end and having a notched lower end adapted to engage the latch-pin of the base-frame, and an automatic latch-releasing device.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LAWRENCE WILLIAMS.
