To all whom it may concern.:

Beit known that I, GEORGE A. NnLsoN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication.

This invention relates to improvements in that class oi beds whichfold up less than full length; and the same consists of certain novel features in the construction, arrangement, and operation of the several parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed ont in the claim.

Figure l is a broken-away longitudinal section looking at the opposite inner side, the bed being in a vertical or folded position; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section looking at the opposite inside, the bed proper being in a horizontal position ready for use, with parts broken away. Fig. 3 shows the foot or a part of the bed-frame broken away in Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5, and G show detached details of constrnction; Fig. 7, a longitudinal section.

In the drawings, A represents the wardrob back-case, and B the bed proper.

In the construction of the bed-frame the side rails, C, are made in two parts, being cut in two near the head end, as shown in Fig. 2, the two parts being ad j ustably seen red together so as to fold one upon the other by means of the hinge or hinges a. The head ends C of the side rails are in turn adjustal bly secured to the inside back part of the case A by means of the strap-hinge a', provided with a hook end adapted to engage with the cyebolt n2. By this simple arrangement the frame or bed proper may be easily detached and removed from the back-case, and when folding or unfolding the bed the head ends of the rails are adapted to assume either a vertical or a horizontal position, as may be required, the two parts folding against each other when the bed is arranged vertically, as shown in l.

The ends of the lever or supportingbrace D are biiurcated (see Fig. 4) and turned at right angles and in opposite directions relative to each other, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper inner end of the lever or levers D is pivoted to the lower outer corner of the head part of the side rails, and extends from this point in a diagonal direction to the door when the bed 3, is lowered, and assumes a horizontal position on the inside bottom of the bookcase (see Fig. 1) when the bed is folded.

By means oi' this construction and arrangement the bed is easily and conveniently raised or lowered or moved from one part of the room to another, and at the same time strongly supported when resting in a horizontal position. Vhen the bed is folded, the levers assume the position shown in Fig. l, the friction-rollers in the joining ends of said levers 8 being raised from contact withthe door. rIhe notched end of the horizontal rack bar or bars E, arranged on the inside of the bed rails, is adapted to be adjusted to different positions on the pin b', formed on the lever D'. The opposite ends of the rackbars are attaehed to the ends ofthe mattress foot-rail F, and serve to stretch and keep the mattress tant.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
