IMPROVEMENT lN WARDRBE-BEDSTEADS.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT GLELAND, of Bevington, in the county ofMadison and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Wardrobe-Bedstead, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to economize houseroom and housekeepers labor by constructing a bedstead in such a manner that the bed-bottom and bed-clothing thereon can be readily adjusted for use or inclosed together in a supporting-frame and bureau-form case, and thereby be concealed and protected.

It consists in forming, arranging, and combining a portable frame and case, a series of movable drawers, and an adjustable bed-bottom, all as hereinafter fully set forth.

Figure 1 of my drawing is a perspective view of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a central cross-section view4 of the same. Together vthey fully illustrate its construction and operation.

A is one of the end pieces of my bureaufor-m frame and case. A corresponding piece is required at the opposite end. They may vary in width and height as desired, and may be paneled, and carved, molded, and ornamented in any style of art. B is a horizontal top, rigidly fixed on the tops of the end pieces A by means of screws, or in any suitable way. C C are vertical sides framed to the end pieces A, or secured thereto by suitable fastening devices. 1 2 3 4 represent a series of horizontal drawers that slide in and out on suitable bearings through the corresponding openings in the sides C. They may be made of Wood, sheet metal, or other suitable material, and vary in size and number as desired. In lieu of drawers, shelves and hinged doors may be used to utilize part of the drawer-space. D D are movable covers for closing the parallel open spaces of the complete case on the opposite sides of the central top-board B. In their closed positions they are inclined downward from the center-board B. In their open position they stand vertically on edge, and form -the side-board of the bed, to which the bed-bottom is rigidly attached. g g are the curved end pieces and runners of the bed-bot tom, rigidly fixed to the under sides and near the ends of the movable side-boards and covers D. The free ends of these runners g are connected by means of a bar or side rail to form a complete bed-bottom frame to support a series of cross-slats, 5 6 7 8. Springs may be applied to these cross-slats in any suitable manner to form au elastic bedbottom.

h h represent grooves or tracks formed in the insides of the end pieces A of the frame and case. 'lhey are concentric with the curved runners g, and form bearings upon which to move the bed-bottom in and out of the case. In place of forming grooves in the Wood, bearings or tracks of corresponding form may be applied on the surface of the wood to perform the same function as grooves. The runners g and bearings h may be made of wood or metal, and secured in their respective places in any suitable way. Anti-friction rollers and springs may be applied to ease and facilitate the moving and adjusting of the beds.

m represents a vertical division-board fixed in the center of the case. By dividing the complete apparatus vertically through its longitudinal center, two single bureau-beds will be produced. It is therefore obvious that my invention is equally well adapted for making single or double beds and wardrobes upon the same plan.

In the practical use of my invention a mattress and bed-clothing are placed upon the bedbottom in a common way, while it is withdrawn and extended from the case, and retained in a xed horizontal position by suitable catches and stops, or by the side rails of the bed-bottom, which come in contact with and rest against the top edges of the sides G, upon which the series of cross-slats 5 6 7 8 rest at the same time. In this position the bed can be occupied, and the runners g will serve as head and foot boards, and the covers D and B as side-boards.

When the bed is not occupied the complete bed-bottom, together with the bedding upon it, can be readily pushed and turned into the case by means of the runners g and their tracks h, and concealed and protected therein until it is to be occupied again, when it can be readily withdrawn to assume its normal position as a bed.

The series of drawers l 2 3 4 can at all times be advantageously used for storing clothing and other articles, and where shelves and doors are substituted for drawers, bed-room wares may be conveniently inclosed and concealed therein when not in use.

Casters may be attached to the feet of' the portable case, so that it can be readily moved about as desired.

A simple and complete wardrobe and bed is thus provided that will not occupy as much Hoor-space as an ordinary bcdstead, and that will practically and advantageously conceal and protect the bed-clothing when not in use.
