IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING BQX-BE DS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3 33,137, dated November 19, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED G. BAYLES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Box-Bed, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved folding box-bed folded or closed. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of the same taken through the line a; m, Fig. 1, the mattress being removed. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same extended as a bed, the mattress being removed. Fig. 4-.is a detail longitudinal section of the same taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 3.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved folding box-bed, simple in construction and convenient in use, which, when folded, will occupy but little space, while at the same time furnishing a convenient receptacle for clothing and various other articles, and which, when opened out, will furnish a complete bed; and it consists in the folding box-bed formed of the two hinged parts, stationary and hinged molding, ledge, horizontal partition, inclined partition, and vertical partitions forming spaces for the chest, drawer, and closet, said parts being constructed and arranged in connection with each other, as hereinafter more fully described.

The box or body of the bed is made in two parts, A B, which are hinged to each other at one side by hinges O, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The box A B has a molding, D E, around its top, the part D of which is permanently secured in place, and the other part is hinged so that when the part B of the box is turned back the said molding E may serve as legs to support the weight, the cross-bar of the molding supporting the weight, the hinges simply pivoting the molding in place. The inner end of the part B, when opened out, is supported upon a ledge, S, attached to the part A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, so as to relieve the hinges C from any strain. The mattress is made in two parts, F G, the part F, when the box is opened, resting upon the under side of the top of the box, and is secured in place by tapes H, as shown in Fig. 4, so that it may retain its place while the box is being opened and closed. The other part G of the mattress rests upon a horizontal partition, I, in the part A of the box. The spaces in which the parts F G of the mattress rest are made of such a depth that the edges of said parts may project sufficiently above the mattress to give space for the bed-clothes, so that when the bed is made up and the edges of the bed-clothes tucked in around the edges of the mattress the box may be opened and closed without disturbing the make-up of the bed. The adjacent edges of the two parts of the box A B, upon its hinged side, are cut away, as shown in Fig. 1, so that they may not inconvenience the sleeper, the mattress, when the bed is opened out, bulging over said recessed edges so as to be continuous. The open space formed by recessing the said adjacent edges is designed to be covered by cloth, leather, or other suitable material, so as to keep out dust, insects, &c. The edges of the part B opposite the hinges C may be provided with a board, J, which, when the box A B is closed, overlaps the part A, and, when the box is opened, serves as a foot-board to' the bed. K is the bolster, which, when arranged for use, is placed upon a partition, L, the ends of which rest upon inclined cleats attached to the box A, and the inner edge of which is hinged to the edge of the horizontal partition I. The part A of the box A B, beneath the partitions I L, is divided into three spaces by a crosspartition, M, beneath the adjacent edges of the partitions I L and the longitudinal partition N, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The space 0 beneath the inclined. partition L may serve as a chest to contain clothing and other things. One of the spaces beneath the partition I may be occupied by a drawer, l, and the other is provided with a door, Q, to adapt it to serve as a small closet, R. The various parts of the box-bed are all close, and are made with close joints, so that there are no lurking places for insects.

By this construction a very comfortable and convenient bed is produced, designed more especially for those living in boarding-houses -or in hired rooms, and who may desire to furnish their own beds, and have them in such a shape that they may be conveniently moved from place to place.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to s'scnre by Letters Patcnt- An improved folding box-bed, consisting of the hinged parts A B, stationary and hinged molding D E, ledge S, horizontal partition I, inclined partition L, and Vertical partitions M N, forming spaces for the chest 0, drawer P,

and closet Q B, said parts being constructed and arranged in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
