IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDlNG BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lll, dated May 13, 1873 application led April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED G. BAYLEs and JOHN W. H. UANOLL, of the city, county, and State of New York, and GEORGE DMINER,
' of Williamsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Bed, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved folding bed, shown as folded or closed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through the line w :10, Fig. l, the mattress being removed. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same opened out. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken through the line y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
Our invention has for its object to improve the construction of the folding bed described in Letters Patent No. 133,137, issued to the said Alfred G. Bayles, November 19, 1872, so as to make it simpler in construction, and make it more nearly resemble a table or other similar article of furniture.
The invention consists in an improved fold ing bed, 'formed of the two parts hinged to each other, the stationary and hinged molding and the legs, constructed and arranged in connection with each other, as hereinafter fully described, and in the detachable end-board, provided with lugs and a knob-button, in combination with the recessed sides or" the folding bed-body, as hereinafter fully described.
The body of the bed is made in two parts, A B, which are hinged to each other at one side by hinges C, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The part B has a molding, D E, around its top, the part D of which is permanently secured in place, and the other part, E, is hinged, so that when the said part B of the bed-body is turned back the said part E of the molding may swing out and serve as legs to support the weight, the cross-bar of the molding supporting the weight, the hinges being simply intended to pivot the molding in place. The part A of the bed-body, and the whole of said body, when closed, is supported upon legs F. The tops of the legs F, at the hinged side,
project a little to serve as ledges to support the inner end of the part B when opened out, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to relieve the hinges G from any strain. The mattress is made in two parts, G H. The part H, when the body A B is opened out, rests upon the under side of the top of the said part B, and is secured in place by tapes I, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that it may retain its place while the body ofv the bed is being opened and closed. The other part, C, of the mattress rests upon the bottom of the part A of the body of the bed. The spaces in which the parts G H of the mattress rest are made of such a depth that the edges of three of the sides of the parts A B of ,the body of theibed may project sufciently above the mattress to give space for the bed-clothes, so that when the bed is made up and the edges of the bed-clothes are tucked in around the edges of the mattress G H, the parts A B may be opened and closed without disturbing the make-up of the bed. The adjacent edges of the parts A B, upon their hinged side, are cut away, as shown'in Figs. 2 and 4, so that they may not inconvenience the sleeper, the mattress, when the bed is opened out, bulging over said recessed or cut-away edges, so as to be continuous. J is an end-board, which is tted into the open space form by recessing the adjacent edges ofthe hinged sides of the parts A B when the bed is closed, so as to closely cover said opening. Upon the lower edge of the board J are formed, or to it are attached, lugs K,
which overlap the lower of said recessed edges. The board J, near its upper edge, is provided with a button, L, upon its inner side, operated by a knob, M, upon its outer side, so that the said button L may be turned to overlap the upper of said recessed edges, as shown in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. l. The board J must be removed when the bed is to be opened out. The edge of the part A, opposite the hinges C, may be provided with a board, N, which, when the bed is closed, overlaps the other part, and'when the bed is opened serves as a head-board to the bed. rEhe various parts of the bed are made close, and with close joints, so that there are no lurking places for insects.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An improved folding bed, formed of the two parts A B, hinged to each other, the stationary and hinged moldings D E, and the legs F, constructed and arranged in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The detachable end-board J, provided with lugs K and a knob-button, M L, in coinbnation with the recessed sides of the folding bed-body A B C D E F, substantially as herein shown and described.
