H. & B. WILLIAMS.
FOLDING BED.
Patented Sept. 15, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE WILLIAMS AND EDWARD WILLIAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,367, dated September 15. 1885,
Application filed April 15, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, HORACE WILLIAMS and EDWARD WILLIAMs, citizens 'of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in folding beds; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will nowproceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our bed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details of parts thereof'.
A represents the main frame of our bed, which is formed to represent any suitable article of furniture, as a book-case, wardrobe, &c., and has a woven-wire mattress, a, secured within it in the manner common to this class of articles. This bed-frame is hinged upon standards b, which project upward from a rectangular frame, B, resting on the ioor beneath the head of the bed, as in Fig. 2. lt is common to hinge the bed-frame in a case into which it folds; but this case must of necessity be well finished and is expensive to make, besides adding greatly to the weight of the device, and serves no function in the operation of the bed. In this invention it will be observed that the base or supporting frame is small, and, being entirely inclosed within the bed-frame, it may be roughly and cheaply made without expensive finish.
The lower or head portion of the bed-frame is formed with vertical slots c, to allow of the passage of the standards b when the bed is lowered, and these slots are concealed, when folded, by hinged pieces C, which close over them, and also form locks to hold the bed upright by resting upon the base-frame B, as in Fig. l.
The foot-legs D are connected by a foot or cornice board, D, which forms a finish to the top of the simulated article of furniture when (No model.)
the bed is folded, and these legs are connected to the frame by links d d, pivoted to both the frame and legs, and when the bed is lowered the legs swing outward and retain a Vertical position, the links not only supporting the bed, but holding the legs and foot board firmly against it, as in Figs. 2 and 3. When the bed is folded, the legs swing down upon their links and rest upon blocks d, secured upon the side boards of the frame, as in Fig. 4.
The head-board E is pivoted in the main frame, and folds in upon the clothing, being supported, when in use, by abrace, E, having a top-propjoint7 ora rule-joint, e, asseen in Fig. 2.
This bed is thus cheaply made, and the supporting-frame is entirely concealed within the bed at all times, as shown in the drawings.
v We are aware of English Patent No. 2,310 of 1853, and the device therein shown, but do not claim the same.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1., In a folding bed, the combination, with a supporting-frame provided with suitable standards, of a bed-frame hinged upon said standards and completely surrounding and concealing the entire supporting devices, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a supportingframe having standards projecting therefrom, of a bed-frame pivoted upon and inclosing said standards, vertical openings in the bed frame to permit the passage of the standards as the bed is operated, and hinged flaps for covering these openings when the device is folded, substantially as shown and described.
3. The frame B and its standards b, in combination with the bed-frame A, pivoted thereon and surrounding the standards, the slots c, and the hinged flaps C, adapted, when the bed is folded, to cover the slots and rest upon the frame B to lock the bed closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
,HORACE WILLIAMS.
EDWARD WILLIAMS. Witnesses:
W. C. MOARTHUR, CHAs. KREssMANN.
