BED-TABLE. i
Application filed January 29, 1913.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD L. MAISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented new' and useful Improvements in Bed-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an article of furniture, and more particularly to the class of convertible tables.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a table in which its make-up. permits the converting of thesame into a bed, thereby affording a combination table and bed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character in which the upper portion thereof forms a receiver or holder for the springs and mattress so that on the adjustment of the table it can be utilized as a bed, the leg portions of the table being constructed for accommodating books, periodicals or the like, thus serving as book shelves.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an article of furniture of this character which is simple in construction, neat andl attractive in appearance, thoroughly reliable and efficient in it-s purposes, strong, durable, readilyT and easily convertible into a table or bed, and also one which is inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of an article of furniture constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 8 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. l is a side elevation showing the table converted into a bed. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the table showing the extension legs in position for supporting the hinged sections of the top, the side of the lat-ter being lowered into the position shown.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the convertible table comprises a box-like body A, which is formed from a stationary Specification of Letters Patent.

section 5 and a movable swinging section 6, the stationary section being supported by means of spaced inner and outer vertical legs 7 and 8 respectively, which are fastened thereto in any desirable manner. The stationary and movable sections 5 and 6 are each provided with an open side 9, the end walls 10 of the movable section being of a slightly greater depth than the end walls 11 of the stationary section 5, and .connected to the inner faces of these end walls 10 and 11 at the open side 9 of the sect-ion are link hinges 12 whereby the movable section 6 can be swung on to the stationary section 5 or the said movable section 6 can be brought into a horizontal plane in alinement with the stationary section, the said movable section 6 being supported in the latter position in a manner presently described.
A pair of the inner legs 7 are fixed to ex-. tension slides 18 which are suitably mounted in guideways 14 formed'in the panels 15. Arranged between the outer legs 8 and secured to the panels 15 are shelves 16 which are also fixed in any desirable manner to the outer legs 8 and to the remaining pair of immovable inner legs 7, the shelves being designed to support books, ornaments or the like. Vhen the slides 18 are pulled out to one side of the table structure the same together with the movable inner pair of legs 7 support the swinging section 6 in a horizontal position so that a bed spring 17, which in this instance is of the folding type, can be supported and confined within the said sections 5 and 6 to accommodate a mattress so that the article of furniture can be used as a bed.
Arranged at the open end of the stationary section 5 is a side piece or board 18 which is connected to the bottom of the said stationary section by means of hinges 19 so that the board can swing for closing the opening in the said stationary section. Connected to the board 18 is a second board 20. the same being connected by means of hinges 21 to the said board 18, and this board 2O is designed to close the opening in the movable section 6 when swung to superimposed position upon the stationary section 5, whereby the article of furniture can be used as a table, the boards 18 and 20 being held in position for closing the open sides of the said sections in any desirable manner, and
the outer faces thereof are grooved or orna mented to give the appearance of slide ici drawers7 while mounted in the outer faces of the boards are knobs 2Q- which permit the handling of the same to open or closing position and also appear as knobs to the drawers when the sections are closed to afford a table, it being understood of course that the movable inner legs 7 are shifted to their normal positions in alinement with the outer legs when the said sections are closed. lt
will be noted that when the movable section 6 is swung on to the stationary section 5 the springs 17 are confined within the body A and concealed from view 'so that the article of furniture has the appearance of a table and can be used for the purposes intended thereof.
On extending the pair of inner legs 7 by pulling outwardly upon the same the slides 13 and said inner legs will be in a position to support the boards 18 and 20 and also the movable section 6 which is swung upwardly and outwardly into a horizontal plane alining with the stationary section 5, the spring being laid flat upon the sections when in such position so as to support a mattress and thereby afford a bed.
At opposite ends o-f the shelves 16 and fixed to the same and also to the bottom of the stationary section 5 are spaced vertical end slats 23 which prevent books when stacked upon the shelves from falling outwardly from the ends thereof. These slats 23 also ornament the article of furniture.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
l/Vhat is claimed is An article of furniture comprising a foldable sectional body adapted to be folded and unfolded for forming a table and bedstead frame respectively, a support for the body including stationary legs, slides connected with the said support, legs connected with the outer ends of the slides and adapted to support one of the sections o-f the body when unfolded, the said body being open at one end thereof, and a two-part hinged closure for the open end of the body and adapted to be extended on the slide to form a rest for the sections unfolded onto the same.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
