This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wardrobe-bedsteads, and the novelty resides in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and

then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in whiche- Figure l is afront View of the frame of the bed when folded, with the book-cases, dac., open. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line c of Fig. l, with the bookcases, &c., folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the back of the hinged pillow-board, showing its rollers.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designztes the case supported upon suitable casters D are the side rails of the bed-frame, and E thehinged head or pillow board.

F are tracks upon the inside of the case A, the lower ends of said tracks being tapered,

as shown in Fig. 2, to assist the spring H,

hereinafter described.

The pillow-board E is hinged to the fixed portion of the headboard by means of suitable hinges P.

vB are the book-cases or wardrobes, hinged to the outer'front edges of the sides of the case A and supported upon suitable casters C. These wardrobes or book-cases are designed to be constructed after any suitable design,

&c. The wardrobes or book-cases are designed to act as a support to the case of. the bed when the bed is lowered. Vhen either section is swung` one-quarter round, it forms a perfect and'sulistantial support for the case of the bed, making it impossible for the case to tip forward onto the bed when lowered. lEither section may be swung to any desired angle embraced within three-quarters of a circle. The bed-frame and bedding, when folded up into the case A, are partially inclosed by the same, the back of which extends from the top to within one or tWo feet of the base. .This vopening is for the purpose of giving easy access to the ratchet-shafts to adjust the tension Aof the springs,hereinafter described, and to allow of free access of the air to the bedding. Vhen the wardrobes or book-cases are swung to, the bed is entirely hidden from view.

Supported in suitable brackets attached to the bottom of the case A are the ratchet-shafts K K, provided with ratchets L L, formed with collars having so'cket-s Rfor compressing the springs, hereinafter described, to adjust the tension thereof to the required power. SaidV shafts are lalso provided with longitudinal slots Q, into which extend the bent ends of the springs N N.

M M are pawls engaging the ratchets to prevent retrograde movement thereof.

The springs N N are coiled one about each.

shaft K, with one bent end in the slot Q of said shaft, as above described, and the other end extended to form a radial or tangential arm N', which is passed through the fixed portion of the head-board and properly secured to the side rails of the bed-frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. These springs are madeof very strong wire and are powerful, and the arms N are sufficiently stron g to support the head of the folding sectionf The tension of these springs is soadj usted that they serve to lift the bed and fold it into the case. rlhe action of these springs when the bed is lowered is in a true circle in the direction of the. coil thereof. y

The hinged pillow-board E is provided near its ends at its outer edge with two rollers G G, adapted to travel on the tracks F F of the case, as shown in Figs. 1 and2. A transverse IOO roller Lsupported in suitable brackets on the rear of the pillowboard, extends across the same, as shown in Figs 2 and 3, and also travels on the said tracks.

H is a spring attached at its upper end to the back wall of the case A, and held thereto adj uslably by a clamp-bolt J, and at its lower end bent to form the curve or hook O. This spring H rests upon the roller adjacent tothe pillow-board, and when the bed is lowered the roller I follows the sp1-ing H downward, and at the point where the greatest tension is exerted 011 the springs N N the roller comes in contact with the curve or hook O of the spring I-I and the incline S of the lower ends of the tracks F, which assists in forcing the bed to the floor and holding it there.

IVe claim- 1. The combination, with the case and bedframe, of the pillow-board E, hinged to the head-rail of the bed-frame, provided with the rollers G G, perpendicular tracks F F, at-

tached to the case, and whose lower ends are inclined at S, the roller I, the perpendicular bar or rod spring ll, passing over the roller I, which is attached to the pillow-board E, adapted for equalizing the power of the springs N N and holding the bed at any given point in lowering or folding up the saine, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the case and bcdframe hinged thereto, of the pillow-board hinged to the head-rail of the bed-frame, a roller I, arranged centrally at the free end of the pillow-board, rollers G G at the ends ot' the said board, the Vertical tracks F F on the case and on which the rollers G G travel, the said tracks being inclined at their lower ends, and the spring Il, attached to the case, bearing on the roller I and formed at its lower end with a hook or curve (l, substantially as shown and described.
