DNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED S. BURNHAM, OF PABKERSBRG, IOWA.
BUREAU-BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,455, dated August 30, 1881.
ApplicationtledMay26, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, ALFRED S. BURNHAM, a citizen of the United States, resident of Parkersburg, inthe conntyofBntlerand State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bureau-Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of alongitndinal section of myinvention, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section ot' the same.
This invention has relation to devices for supporting bedding, and it consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement of the roller carrying the canvas or wire mattress and bedding, and the jointed frame, also attached to said canvas or wire mattress, where by the device may be arranged to form a part ot' a bureau, secretary, cupboard, or bookcase, or other piece of furniture of similar nprightform, as hereinaftershown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the frame or case of a bureau, in connection with which I have illustrated this invention. The lower portion of this case is made without drawers, and consists, mainly, of the sidewalls or supports, B. The front O of said lower portion of the case is separately constructed, and is designed to t the front bearings, a, of the case when closed up against the same. The front C is designed to be provided with casters, and is connected to the case-walls B by means of the jointed and folding side rails, D. These side rails are designed to fold inward horizontally, and have no vertical motion, so that the front C is braced and held in upright position thereby when it is separated from the case by the extension of the side rails. Latches b and keepers c serve to brace the middle joints of theside rails when extended.
E represents a shaft or roller, which isjournaled in bearings d, arranged in the case-walls B, and a key-seat, e, is provided for the engagement of a crank-key, F, whereby the shaft or roller is turned. A ratchet, g, and pawl t are arranged at the end of the roller E, and serve as a convenient means of tightening the canvas or'wire mattress G, one end of which is attached to said roller. The other end of this mattress is attached to a bearing, k, of the fro-nt C, which, when drawn out, becomes the head or foot of the bedstead thus formed.
Hooks Z are secured to the ends of the mattress-roller, and a transverse bar, a, arranged over the bed-clothes and in engagement with said hooks, serves to hold the bed-clothes and mattress together and to the roller during the rolling operation. Vhen the mattress and coverings are rolled up the side rails are folded beneath thc mattress, and the front O is closed against thc rase-walls B.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s- I. The mattress roller or shaft E, having the keysent e and attached canvas or wire-cloth mattress G, and the separable front O, also connected to the mattress, and having side rails extending to the case A, supporting said roller or shaft, substantiallj7 as specified.
2. In a bureau or other case, A, the separable front O and folding side rails, D, the rolling mattress G and roller E, the hooks l, and holding-bar n, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence ot' two witnesses.
ALFRED SANFORD BURNHAM.
Witnesses C. C. WOLF, BERT LAWRENCE.
