SWING 0R CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed June 27, 1912. Serial No. 706,218.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ITENRY E. SKEELs, of Rochester, in the county .of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swings or Chairs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to swings or chairs and more particularly to that type designed for outdoor use upon. porches or lawns, and an .object of the invention is to provide asimple and inexpensive construction in which all danger of injury to the users, whether old and infirm or very young, is eliminated.
To this and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel featuresbeing pointed out in the appended claims. I i
In the drawings: Figure 1 is atop view of a chair or swing constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the chair or swing;
and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line a-a Fig. 2.
According to this invention, there may be employed two seats each of which preferably comprises a pair of side pieces 1 connected by the slatted bottom 2 and having a back 3 preferably hinged thereto at 1 so as to swing forwardly between side pieces 1,
the lower end 5 of the back cooperating with the rear slat of the bottom to limit the rearward movement of the back. The two seats are rigidly connected together preferably by means of a horizontal bar 6 which is secured to the upper faces of the slats 2 substantially midway between the sides of the seat so as to provide seating portions on opposite sides of the bar, said bar thereby lying substantially in a plane with the bottoms of the seats.
Each seat may be supported upon a rocking element which preferably comprises a pair of side frames connected by a pivot bar 7 and tie bars 8, the side frames preferably embodying two pieces 9 arranged at an angle to each other and having a rocker 10 secured to the outer faces thereof above the lower ends to provide projections 11 below the rocker 10. The pivot bar 7 preferably, lies between two of the slats 2 and is held in this position by the keeper or latch 12% pivoted to one of the slats 2, at 18, the distance between the slats between which the pivot bar lies being widened so that the seat will roll by the pivot bar as the rocker 10 moves. There may also be provided a base frame comprising, preferably, a pair of longitudinally extending bars 1a which may be held in spaced parallel relation by the foot piece 15 lying between the two seats. The longitudinal bars 141 form ways on which the rockers 10 of the rocking elements of the two seats operate, the projection 11 of the rocking elements cooperating with the inner faces of the ways 14 and preventing lateral movement of the rocker on the ways. The base is also provided with a pair of transverse portions or rods 16 on each side of the foot piece 14, these transverse rods also cooperating with the projections 11 on the rocking elements and servingto prevent shifting movement of the rocking elements on thebase frame. The rocking movement would be limited by the inner tie rods 8 engaging with the horizontal connecting bar 6 but it is preferred to employ a flexible connector 17 between the horizontal connecting bar 6 and the foot piece 15 to limit the rocking movement as this prevents jars and assists in effecting the return movement.
The operation of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing but it may be summarized as follows: The swing will hold four people, two on each seat, the rocking movement being effected by pressure of the feet upon a foot piece 15 causing a move ment of the seats in their plane.
A swing or chair constructed in accordance with this invention is simple in opera tion, inexpensive to manufacture, and not liable to get out of order. The foot piece is arranged upon a rigid base frame so that it is possible for an old or infirm person or a child to enter or leave the chair or swing without any inconvenience. The rocking elements are of simple construction and their connections with the seats and the base frame are such that these three parts may be separated for shipment or storage, and while in use, they are very effective after performing their functions. The rigid connection between the seats is also simple and is so located and arranged that it permits the occupants to reach the foot piece on the base frame.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A swing or chair embodying a base having two track members and a foot piece rigidly connecting them, two seats rigidly connected together, rocking elements pivoted to the seat members and movable on the track members on opposite sides of the foot piece, and means for preventing the creeping of said rocking elements on said track members in the direction of the length of said track members.
2. In a swing chair, the combination with a base frame having a transverse foot piece and a pair of longitudinal ways, of a pair of rocking elements movable on the ways, a pair of double seats, one supported on each rocking element, a horizontal bar secured at its ends to the bottoms of said seats at a point midway between the sides of the seats to permit free entrance to the seats on opposite sides of the bar, a flexible connection between the bar and the foot piece, and means for preventing the creeping of said rocking elements on said track members in the direction of the lengths of said track members.
3. In a swing or chair, the combination with a pair of rigidly connected seats having their bottoms formed of transverse slats, of rocking elements each embodying a horizontal pivot rod located between two of the slats of one of the seat bottoms.
4:- In a swing or chair, the combination Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washing o Dag,
with a pair of rigidlyconnected seats, of a pair of rocking elements, one for each seat, said elements having projections depending below the rockers of said rocking elements, and a base frame having ways for engagement ,by the rockersof the rocking elements and portions for engagement by the project ns- 5. In a chair or swing, the combination with a pair of rigidly connected seats, of a pair of rocking elements each embodying two side frames having projections at their lower ends and rockers secured to the outer faces of the side frames above the projections, and a base frame having ways on which the rockers work and portions engaged .by the projections to limit the movements of the rocking elements on the base frame.
'6. In a. chair or swing, the combination with a pair of rigidly connected seats; of a pair of rocking elements, one for each seat and each embodyinga pivot rod, a pair of angularly arranged supports at each end of the rod and a rocker secured to the outer faces of the supports above their lower ends to form projections; and a base frame having ways on'which the rockers work and por tions engaged by the projections to limit the movements of the rocking elements.
