INVENTOR UNITED STATES "PATENT onrron.
WILLIAM HOWIE MIIIR, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO JENKS AND MUIR MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPO- RATION.
CHILDS BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HOWIE MUIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of'Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Childrens Beds; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to childrens beds.
It has for its object an attachment used to hold a sliding panel to the side of the main frame. By means of the improved attachment the panel may be readily removed entirely and replaced in position and raised and lowered to fence in the bed or leave it open at the side.
In Figure 1 the relation between the part containing the invention and an ordinary crib is shown. In Fig. 2 is shown a post containing the invention. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail. Fig. 4 shows a modified catch by which the panel is held.
The post 1 forms the corner-post of the crib. To the top and bottom are secured brackets 2-and-3, one of which, 2, is provided with a socket for the reception of the end of a rod 4, upon which the side panel 8 of the bed engages. The bottom bracket 3 is also provided with a socket and with a notch leading through the side walls of the bracket into the socket. The notch leading into the socket is narrower than the diameter of the socket. The rod 4 after having one end thereof engaged in the socket in the bracket 3 may be swung through the notch into the socket 1n the bracket 2. The socket in the bracket 2 is larger in diameter than the rod whichengages therein, and a fillet 5, which slips on the rod, is pushed along the rod into the socket.
The fillet 5 is of a diameter so great that it cannot swing through the notch 6, and when slipped into place it effectively holds the rod in position in the socket. The panel 8 is provided at its ends with brackets 9 and 10, and these brackets are each provided with. eyes that slip or can slip on the rod 4. The fillet 5 is preferably made of rubber and serves as a bumper or cushion when the bracket on the panel drops against-it. The panel is held in its elevated position, by means of hooks 11,
which couple the top bracket and the side thus secured in position, together with the panel to which it is attached.
What I claim is- 1. A holder for the sliding panel of a cribbedstead, having, in combination with a corner-post, laterally-projecting brackets at the top and bottom thereof, one of said brackets being provided with a closed socket for the reception of the end of a rod and the other of said brackets having a horizontally-extending notch terminating in a complementary socket, a rod engaging between said sockets, and a fillet adapted to slide on the rod and engage in one of said sockets and lock the rod in place with respect thereto, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a pair of cornerposts, laterally-projecting brackets at the top and bottom of each, one of the brackets on each post having a closed socket near its outer end and each of the others being provided with a socket having a passage leading thereto, a rod supported by each pair of sockets in a position of substantial parallelism with respect to its supporting post, fillets engagingabout each of said rods and serving by engagement with said last-mentioned sockets to lock the rods in position, a side panel of a bed having its end portions slidably attached to said rods, and hooks supported by the upper one of each of said pairs of brackets whereby the panel may be held at the desired height, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM I-IOWIE MUIR.
