NITED STATES Patented June 27, 1905.
FRANK M. ABRAMS, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
BABY-CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,168, dated June 27, 1905.
, Application filed August 31, 1904. Serial No. 222,835.
To all when), it 'nu/g cancer/t:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. ABRAMS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Cribs; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to baby-cribs; and the object of the invention is to provide a crib which is adapted to be placed in an open relation at the side of a bed and to have the bottom of the crib drawn laterally upon or over the bed for convenience in caring for a child by the mother or nurse in the bed, all substantially as shown and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the crib with one side down or open, as occurs in use; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof in conjunction with the bed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the screw.
As thus shown, the idea of the invention becomes obvious, as does also its convenience, and the invention comprises a crib A of suitable size and style, provided with a base B of suitable form and elevation to bring the bottom of the crib on the same horizontal plane substantially as the bed or bed-mattress, so that the bottom of the crib may be drawn more or less over the bed, as may be preferred. The body of the crib is provided with a screw a, engaged in base B like an office-chair and adapted to be rotated and give the crib requisite elevation in respect to the bed as well as to reverse it according to the position of the bed, and as beds are of varying heights these or equivalent means for raising and lowering the crib to the desired level are essential to the invention.
C represents the bottom for the crib, upon which the bed of the child rests, and the said bottom or mattress may be of any suitable kind and is adapted to slide or move on rollers or equivalent means on tracks 0 in the bottom proper of the crib.
The front side 52 of the crib is hinged at its lower edge to the crib-frame and adapted to be lowered to a horizontal position,as shown. Said side is provided with cross bars or tracks 3 in line with and on the same plane as bars or tracks a of the crib, so that when the said side 2 is lowered tracks 3 and c are brought into alinement and form continuous tracks for bottom C to draw it out and push it back, as occasion may require.
Chains or equivalent end supports 4 serve to suspend the side 2 of the crib from the corner-posts when said side is down, and the said side is adapted to be raised and locked in its raised position by catch 6 or its equivalent when the crib is to be used as ordinarily and apart from the bed.
By the foregoing construction the child can be drawn to or upon the bed' and receive whatever attentions it may require for the time without removing it from beneath its own covering or disturbing its position and also avoiding all handling of the chil l, or if it be handled it can be easily taken ofl its bed and put back. It can be drawn near by to put it to sleep and then gently moved out again, and it can be placed here or there, as may be found to be the best at the time, but at the same time retain its own bed and bedding. The crib can be turned around or reversed to adapt it to a bed in any position. Preferably the crib is made of metal, but not necessarily, and any desired style of framework may be adopted.
Screw a is provided with a longitudinal groove 6 at one side, into which bolt '7 is adapted to lock, and thereby prevent rotation of the crib on base B.
\Vhat I claim is l. Asa new article of manufacture, a'childs crib having one side adapted to be lowered to a horizontal position and a bottom for the crib movable back and forth onto said side, substantially as described.
2. A childs crib having a laterally-movable bottom and a side adapted to be supported in a horizontal position. and tracks for the said bottom extending across the said side, substantially as described.
3. In cribs for children, a crib having a side hinged to swing into a horizontal position and means to support the side in such position,
tracks across said side and crib and a bed-bota support for the child resting on said tracks,
tom provided with means to ride on said tracks, substantially as described. 10 substantially as described. In testimony whereof I sign this specifica- 4. A childs crib and a base therefor and tion in the presence of two Witnesses. 5 means to fix the elevation and to reverse the FRANK M. ABRAMS.
crib on the base, a hinged side on said crib Witnesses: and means to support said side in a horizontal JOHN A. ABRAMs,
position, tracks across said side and crib, and R. B. MOSER.
