Description
y 1 G. L. MORRIS 2,553,862
CONVERTIBLE CRIB AND CRADLE Filed April 15, 1950 INVENTOR. G. L MORRIS Patented May 22, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a device or article of furniture which is readily convertible for use either as a crib or as a cradle. The change from crib to cradle or vice versa is accomplished by simple inversion of the article, which in one position rests on four spaced foot portions and in the inverted position rests on a pair of rockers.
It is one important object of the present invention to provide such a device with a mattress support which automatically assumes a different operative position whenever the article is inverted.
A further object is to provide a mattress frame so designed that assembly of a prefabricated mattress frame with prefabricated crib side members is facilitated.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device in crib position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the device in cradle position; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional plan view, taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, my improved convertible crib and cradle comprises end memebrs I and l l and crib side members S having upper side rails l2 and lower side rails Hi. All of the side rails are permanently secured to the end members in any convenient manner, as by screws [6.
Each upper side rail I2 is connected to its associated lower side rail I4 by a plurality of upright slats 20, and each side member S comprising an upper rail I2, a lower rail 14 and a plurality of slats 20, is assembled and prefabricated as a unit before being secured between the end members I0 and II.
The mattress frame F comprises end frame members 30 and 3| spaced apart by a plurality of longitudinal slats 32. The parts 30, 3i and 32 are also assembled and prefabricated as a unit before assembly in the crib or cradle.
Each end member 30 or 3| rests on the top surfaces of the lower side rails l4 when the device is positioned for use as a cradle, and similarly rests on the corresponding edges of the top rails [2 when the structure is inverted.
Each outer end portion of each end member 30 or 3| has a deep notch 35 (Fig. 3) to receive the outer edge 20a of one of the outside slats 20.
The edge 20a is nearer the inner surface of the end member In than the width of the member 30, and the distance between the outer edges 20a of the two outside slats 20 is greater than the distance between the facing edges of the end frame members 30 and 3|.
The mattress frame F is thus securely held from accidental displacement but is at the same time freely movable vertically, so that it will drop automatically to a lower and different operative position whenever the article is inverted.
Each notch 35 is also made deep enough so that the prefabricated mattress frame F may be assembled with the prefabricated side members S before the side rails l2 and I4 are secured to the end members I0 and I I. It is thus possible to ship the article knocked-down and to easily and quickly assemble the article after shipment.
Obviously the article may be made in different sizes and may be used either as an article of childrens furniture or as an article of dolls furniture.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is;
1. In a convertible crib and cradle, separated end members each having one curved supporting surface and a reverse supporting surface with transversely spaced foot portions, side members each comprising upper and lower side rails connecting said end members, said side members having vertical side slats mounted between said upper and lower rails, a mattress frame supported on said side rails in either position of said end members, said frame being held from displacement by said side slats and being freely slidable vertically between the upper and. lower side rails when the article of furniture is inverted, and spaced end frame members with the outer end portions thereof extending over the side rails on which said frame is supported and said outer end portions having deep notches on their facing edges to loosely receive the outside slats in said side rails after assembly of a prefabricated mattress frame with a pair of prefabricated side members.
2. The combination in a convertible crib and cradle as set forth in claim 1, in which the facing edges of the end members of the mattress frame are nearer together than the outer edges of the outside slats in said side members, and in which the bottoms of the notches in the end members of the mattress frame are spaced further apart than said outer edges of said outside slats.
