Thus, as a dolls crib, it provides an interesting article for a child to asemble, dis-assemble and use in play with the doll. And, as a childs bed, it provides a bed which is readily dis-assembledto provide a very conveniently transportable article, yet an article which is quickly and readily assembled into its bed-forming position of the parts.
The concepts more particularly provide, from panels which are sufficiently rigid, the components: end frames or panels, a mattress-support frame or panel, and side rails or panels; and the concepts provide a supporting interconnection of the side rails and the end frames by interengaging notches. The assembly is automatically reinforced by the side rails engaging the sides of the mattress-support panel, when the side rails and the end frames are assembled by interengaging the respective notches thereof.
The above description is of a rather introductory nature as to the general nature ofthe invention and its concepts. More particular concepts, features, and details are set forth in the following description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings:
In the drawings, which are somewhat diagrammatic and schematic in nature,
FIG. 1 is a pictorial representation of a rocking bed or crib according to the present invention;
FIGS. 2 and 3, respectively are elevational views of the foot frame member and the head frame member thereof;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the mattress-support frame member thereof; and
FIGS. 5 and 6 are elevational views of the side rails thereof.
As shown in the drawings, an article of furniture such as a bed or crib 10 is shown as illustrating the inventive concepts.
The bed or crib 10 is shown ofa rocking type, and is economically formed of only five components of frammg.
That is, thebed components are a head frame 12 and a foot frame 14, a horizontally extending mattresssupport frame or panel 16, and a pair of'side rail frames or panels 18. The end frames 12 and 14 are each formed as a unitary panel member having a bottom edge having a downwardly convex curvature 19 to provide the rocking nature or effect.
As shown, the horizontally extending mattresssupport panel or frame 16 is supportingly connected to the end frames 12 and 14 by tongues respectively 20 and 22 which extend from the ends of the frame 16 and into rectangular openings 24 and 26 respectively provided in the head panel 12 and foot panel 14.
The tongues 20 and 22 are shown provided on their side edges with a taper 28, making the insertion thereof into the openings 24 and 26 easy and convenient even though the openings 24 and 26 are sufficiently close to the size of the base portions 30 of the tongues 20 and 22 as to assure a tight rigidity of the assembly.
The side panels or rails 18 and the end frames or panels l2 and 14 are shown as interconnected as now described. The end frames 12 and 14 are provided with an upwardly opening slot means 32 on each side thereof, and the side rail frames 18 are provided with a downwardly opening slot means 34 at each end thereof. Each side rail 18, when assembled to the end frames 12 and 14 by interengaging the respective slot means 32 and 34, blocks longitudinal movement of the end frames 12 and 14 by engagement thereof by the side rail ,portions 36 at the edges of the slot means 34 of the side rails 18. Moreover, each end frame 12 and 14 correspondingly blocks transverse movement of the side rails 18 by engagement thereof by the end frame portions 38 at the edges of the slot means 32 of the end frames 12 and 14.
It will be noted also that when the side rails 18 are assembled to the end frames 12 and 14 by interengaging the respective slot means 32 and 34, the side rails 18 abuttingly engage the side portions of the horizontally extending support frame 16; and the side rails 18 are thereby reinforced against transverse movement, adding to the overall rigidity of the assembled bed 10.
It is thus seen that a bed or crib according to concepts of the present invention provides novel and advantageous concepts and features, providing economy of formation, convenience, and ease of assembly and dis-assembly without tools, even by a child, requiring teristics, and accomplishing its intended objects, in-
cluding those hereinbefore pointed out and other which are inherent in the invention. Y
Modifications and variations may be affected without departing from the scope of the novel concepts of the invention; accordingly, theinvention is not limited to the specific form or arrangement of parts herein described or shown.
What is claimed is: v 1. An article of furniture, of a type including: first and second generally vertical end frames; a horizontally extending support frame extending between the end frames; first and second side rail frames, also extending between the end frames;
combination-type interconnection and supporting means supportingly interconnecting said side rail frames and-said end frames, in which the end frames are provided with an upwardly opening slot means on each side thereof and the side rail frames are provided with a downwardly opening slot means adjacent each end thereof;
the above-mentioned interengagement of the said slot means of the end frames and of the side rail frames providing that each side rail, when assembled to said end frames by interengaging the respective slot means as aforesaid, blocks longitudinal movement of the end frame by engagement thereof by the side rail portions at the edges of the slot means thereof, and each end frame correspondingly blocks transverse movement of said side rails by engagement thereof by the end frame portions at the edges of the slot means thereof;
in which the combination-type interconnection and supporting means also includes a support means 5 supportingly interconnecting the respective endportions of the horizontally extending support frame with the side frames;
the combination also providing that each side rail,
when assembled to said end frames by interengaging the respective slot means as aforesaid, abuttingly engages side portions of the horizontally extending support frame and is thereby reinforced against transverse movement.
2. The invention as set forth in claim 1, in a combination in which the support means interconnecting the horizontally extending support frame and the end frames consists of tongues provided at the ends of the said support frame, which tongues respectively extend into openings provided in the respective end frames.
3. The invention as set forth in claim 1 in which the article of furniture is a bed or crib, the said horizontally extending support frame providing a support for the associated mattress or padding thereof, and the said side rails also block the associated mattress or padding thereof against sliding transversely off the said support
Claims (3)
