Claims. (Cl. 5-2) This invention relates to a crib-bed unit, and more specifically provides a combination device wherein a bed may be provided with a detachable pen, thereby providing a crib of relatively large size and wherein the pen may be removed and utilized as a play pen and the bed may be extended, and thereby utilized as a youth bed.
An object of this invention is to provide a crib-bed unit which is simple in construction, versatile in utility, rugged in construction, easy to assemble and disassemble, well adapted for its intended purposes and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cribbed unit wherein an extensible bed is provided and a play pen assembly is provided for assembly with the bed, thereby providing a crib when used in combination and also providing a play pen and a separate youth bed when used separately.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the crib-bed unit of the present invention in assembled position wherein a crib is formed with a portion of the bed forming the bottom thereof;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the pen portion disassembled and used as a portable play pen;
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the bed portion of the assembly of Figure 1 with the bed in extended position and utilized as a youth bed;
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view showing the extensible bed frame and the means for collapsing same;
Figure 5 is a transverse, vertical section taken substantially along section line 5-5 of Figure 1, showing the details of construction of the assembled crib-bed unit and the relationship of the various elements thereof;
Figure 6 is a top plan detailed section taken substantially along section line 6-6 of Figure 1 showing the details of construction of the adjusting means for raising the sides of the pen for receiving the bed thereunder;
Figure 7 is a detailed exploded group perspective showing the extensible side members for raising and lowering the sides of the play pen for receiving the bed;
Figure 8 is a detail perspective view showing the bed frame in extended position; and
Figure 9 is a detail perspective view showing the ring members for detachably securing the extensible portion of the spring to the original spring.
Referring now specifically to Figure 1, it will be seen that the numeral 10 generally designates the crib-bed unit of the present invention and numeral 12 generally indicates the play pen portion of this assembly, and the numeral 14 generally indicates the bed portion of this assembly.
Referring now specifically to Figures 3, 4, 8 and 9, 1t
ted States Patent 0 16 from a supporting surface.
2,783,477 Patented Mar. 5, 1957 will be seen that the bed assembly 14 includes a pair of side rails 16 having inwardly extending flanges 18 adjacent the inner lower edge for supporting coil springs 20. One end of the frame or side rails 16 is rigidly secured to a headboard 22 having depending supporting legs 24 thereon for spacing the headboard 22 and the side rails A suitable mattress 26 is positioned on the springs 20, as desired. It will be seen that each of the side rails 16 is provided with a foldable section 28 at the other end of the side-rails 16 and pivotally secured thereto by suitable hinges 30. .A bracket 32 having projecting downturned hooks 34 is provided on the ends of the" side rails 16 and also on the ends ofthe foldable sections 28 for detachable engagement with a footboard 36 having depending supporting legs 38 that are the same length as the supporting legs 24 that support the headboard 22. A detachable spring section 40 is secured to the end of the springs 20 by a plurality of loop members 42 that engage around adjacent frame portions of the springs 20 and 40, The loops 42 may be split loops for detachable engagement of the springs 20 to the removable portions 40. A removable portion of mattress 44 is secured to the end of the mattress 26 by a suitable zipper 46 wherein the mattress 26 and the removable portion 44 form a youth bed together with the springs 20 and the removable spring section 40, and the side rails 16 and the pivotal sections 28 wherein the length of the bed 14 may be adjusted.
Referring now specifically to the play pen unit designated by the numeral 12 and specifically illustrated in Figures 2, 6 and 7, it will be seen that the play pen 12 includes a bottom 48 having a depending supporting leg 50 at each corner thereof with a supporting caster wheel 52 secured thereto. Side members 54 of skeletonized structure and including horizontal upper and lower rails 56 and vertical interconnecting corner members 58 are provided for vertical adjustment in relation to the bottom 48; A plate 60 is secured to each supporting leg 50 in spaced relation thereto by a spacer 62 and a fastening screw 64 retains the plate 60 thereon. A similar plate 66 is secured to each vertical corner member 58 and includes a spacer 62 and a fastener 64 similar to the device on the supporting legs 50. A channel member 68 is provided with inturned longitudinal edges 70 for slidable reception over the plates 60 and 66 wherein the vertical movement of the sides 54 of the play pen 12 will be guided. When the sides 54 engage the upper surface of the bottom 48 of the play pen 12, the device is utilized in the conventional manner of a play pen.
Referring now to Figure 1, wherein the play pen 12 is assembled on the bed 14, thereby forming the assembled crib-bed unit 10, it will be seen that the bed 14 is reduced in size by removing the detachable section 44 of g the mattress 26 and the detachable section 40 of the springs 20, and the sections 28 of the side rails 16 are folded inwardly, thereby reducing the length of the bed 14. The side members 54 of the play pen 12 are then raised so that the bottom 48 of the play pen 12 will be positioned under the side rails 16 and the lower edges or horizontal frame members 56 of the side members 54 engage the upper surface of the mattress 26. The detachable portions of the mattress 44 and the springs 40 are positioned between the under edge of the frame members 16 and the upper surface of the bottom 48 of the play pen 12. It will be seen that with the side members positioned against the upper surface of the mattress 26, the device forms a relatively large crib for receiving two small children or the like. Further, it will be seen that the device may be utilized with either of the elements thereof utilized separately or in conjunction with each other, as illustrated. It will be understood that the various elements of this construction maybe composed of suitable materials having a structure rugged enough to withstand the usual wear given to small childrens play pens, cribs and beds. Further, it will be seen that the device of this construction provides a versatile piece. of furniture which may be utilized for a long period of time as the child or children gain in size and age.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable. modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
