My invention relates to childrens beds commonly called cribs and having mattress-supporting spring frames adjustable vertically with respect to the crib frame or body.
The invention presents improvements in the childs bed of the Roman B. Bukolt Patent 2,206,248, dated July 2, 1940. In that patent the two drop sides of the crib have at their corners guides slidable vertically on track rods mounted at the four corners of the crib, and said track rods are also used to adjustably support the mattress carrying spring frame by providing the rods with upwardly facing shoulders engageable by swinging latches carried by additional guides slidably mounted on the intermediate portions of the rods and to which intermediate guides the mattress supported frame is connected by suspending links. The present invention provides an improved guiding and latching means on the track rods for supporting and permitting vertical adjustment of the mattress supporting spring frame.
The object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above indicated character which is more simple in construction and less expensive to produce, which is more attractive in appearance and which may be more readily understood and more easily operated by those who desire to change the vertical adjustment of the crib mattress.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a child's bed or crib having the improved supporting and adjusting means for the mattress supporting frame;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with parts broken away;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of portions of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale, parts being broken away;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3:
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the drop side track rods with the adjustable guiding and latching device thereon;
Fig. 6 is a detail vertical longitudinal section through the device on portion of the rod; and
Fig. 7 is a detail section on line 1! of Fig.
Referring more in detail to the drawings the numeral l0 denotes the two end members and II the two drop sides of a well known type of childs bed or crib. While the side members ll maybe connected to the end members in any desired manner, theyare shown with guides I2 at their ends slidable on vertical track rods l3 at the four corners of the crib. The rods it are suitably supported from the inner faces of the members It] in spaced relation thereto and at the ends thereof. The vertically slidable drop sides H are held in adjusted position by suitable bolts or latch devices [4. [5 denotes the usual rectangular mattress supporting frame usually made of angle iron members.
As in the above mentioned patent, I preferably use the track rods 13 for supporting the mattress support [5 in different predetermined positions of vertical adjustment. In the embodiment illustrated the cylindrical rods 13 are formed, on their sides facing the end members, with longitudinally spaced notches l6 which provide upwardly facing shoulders H, the latter being preferably downwardly inclined as seen in Fig. 6. The number of shoulders on each rod will vary according to the desired number of vertical adjustments of the mattress.
Mounted on each of the rods is a combined guiding and latching member I8, the four members being connected to the four corners of the mattress support by suspending links 19. The members [8 are in the form of vertically elongated sleeves having downwardly flared openings 20 to receive the rods [3 so that sleeves [8 have both sliding and lateral swinging movements on the track rods. Since all four of the members or sleeves I8 are the same, a description of one will suffice for all. The upper extremity of the opening 2i] is circular and slightly larger than the diameter of the rod [3, but said opening is enlarged laterally from one side 2| to the other side 22 of the sleeve as shown in Fig. 6, so that the sleeve may have a swinging movement. On the side 2| at or near the larger lower end of. the opening is a tooth or projection 23 shaped to enter the rod notch I6 and forming a downwardly facing shoulder 24 to engage the rod shoulder ll, thus holding the sleeve in an adjusted position on the rod. Within the opening I preferably provide spring means for urging the tooth into the rod notch, and I may employ a curved leaf spring 25 anchoring one end of it by a rivet 26 to the wall 22 so that its free end thrusts against the rod.
Formed on the side 2| of the sleeve at its lower end and adjacent to the tooth 23 I provide a transverse bearing 21 having an opening to receive a pivot 28 at the upper end of one of the links l9. Each of these suspending links is preferably formed from a cylindrical rod, one end of which is bent at right angles to form the pivot pin 28 and its other end bent at right angles in the opposite direction to provide a pivot 29 for removable connection to a corner of the mattress support IS. The pivot 29 may be formed with a flat-faced head 30 to enter a bearing opening 3| formed in a flange of the anglemetal spring frame. The opening 3| has flat wall portions to receive the head 30 when the link is in one position so that when the link is turned to its usual operative position, the pivot pin 29 will be locked or prevented from moving out of the bearing opening. The pivot 28 is also removably secured in the bearing 21 preferably by screw-threading its free end and applying thereto a stop nut 32 which may be shaped to form a finger-piece or knob for use in actuating the sleeve.
It will be apparent that when the mattress support is to be vertically adjusted the knobs 32 at one end of the crib will be grasped and first pressed laterally toward the adjacent end member Ill and then moved vertically either upwardly or downwardly until the shoulders in the sleeves engage the shoulders on the rods above or below those which were previously engaged. The other end of the mattress support is then similarly adjusted. While the corresponding shoulders of all four rods are disposed in horizontal planes, the pivotal connection of the suspending links will permit the mattress support to be adjusted to inclined positions in which one end is higher than the other end. It will be further noted that by making the suspending links I 9 and the sleeves [8 as above set forth, all four links may be of identical construction and allfour sleeves may likewise be the same, these sleeves being preferably die-castings. That is possible because of the detachable connections of the links and the fact that the sleeves may be reversed on the pivots 28. It is. further to be noted that by arranging the rod notches to face theend members l0, and by positioning the pivot bearings 2.1 adjacent the teeth 23, the weight of the mattress support will tend to pull the links IS in a direction to urge the coacting shoulders on the sleeves and rods into engagement.
The. device provides an extremely simple and effective means for supporting and vertically adjusting the crib mattress since it is composed of few relatively inexpensive parts which are easy to assemble and which are strong and not likely to break or get out of order. Further, the device is not only small and attractive in appearance, but it is easily understood and operated by those who must adjust the mattress.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that novel and advantageous provision has been made for carrying out the object of the invention, and While preferences have been disclosed, attention is invited to the possibility of making variations within thescope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a bed, two spaced endmembers connected together and each having two spaced parallel vertical track rods with longitudinally spaced notches forming upwardly facing shoulders, a rectangular support for a mattressbetween said end members and means for supporting said mattress support from said rods in vertically adjusted positions predetermined by the spacing of said shoulders, said means comprising a vertically elongated guide sleeve mounted on each of said rods for both slidableand' lateral swinging movements, each sleeve having a down wardly facing shoulder engageable with the shoulders on the associated rod by the swinging movements of said sleeves, springs within said sleeves between their inner walls and the rods passing through the sleeves for swinging the latter to cause engagement of the shoulders of said sleeves with those of the rods during the sliding movements of the sleeves, and suspending links connecting the corners of said mattress support to said sleeves.
2. The structure of claim 1 in which each of said sleeves has a downwardly flared opening to slidably receive a rod, said springs are leaf springs anchored at one end in the openings in the sleeves and thrust against said rods, and said downwardly facing shoulders of said sleeves are formed by the lower edges of the openings in said sleeves.
3. The structure of claim 1 in which the upper ends of said suspending links carry transversely extending pivots which extend through and are removably mounted for rotation in bearings in said sleeves, and in which said pivots are retained in said bearings by removable stops applied to the ends of said pivots and serving as finger-pieces for theactuation of said sleeves on said rods.

In a bed, two spaced end-members connected together and each'having two spaced parallel vertical track rods spaced inwardly from such end member adjacent corners of the bed, eachof said rods being formed with longitudinally spaced notches forming upwardly facing shoulders, the notches in the rods at each end of the bed being disposed towardsaid endmembers,
a rectangular support for a mattress between said end members, andmeans -for supporting said mattress support from said rods in vertically adjusted positions predetermined by the spacing of said shoulders, said means comprising a vertically elongated guide sleeve mounted on each of said rods for both slidable and lateral'swinging movements, said sleeves having downwardly flared openings to receive said'rods and downwardly facing shouldersto coact'with said shoulders on said rods, eachshoul'deron a sleeve being located at one side'of the lowerend of the opening in such sleeve,,a spring within each sleeve anchored to the side opposite to the firstmentioned side thereof and thrusting against. the adjacent rod, and suspending links connecting the corners of said mattress. support to said sleeves, said links having their upper ends pivoted to the lower portions of said sleeves on the sides of the latter having said" downwardly facing shoulders, whereby the weight of the mattress support will tend to swing the lower portions, of said sleeves inwardly and hold the coacting shoulders on the sleeves and rods in engagement.
5. The structure of claim 4 in' which said sleeves have transversebearings located'in their lower portions on their sideshaving-said downs wardly facing shoulders, and in which the pivoted connections of saidlinks to'said'sleeves include laterally extending pivots on said-links extend ing through said bearings and removably mounted therein and removable stops on the ends of said pivots serving as finger-pieces foractuating said sleeves.
6. In a'bed, two spaced end members connected together-and each having two'spaced parallel vertical track rods spaced, inwardly from such end member'adjacent corners of the'b'ed, each of said rods being formed with-longitudina1ly spaced notches forming-upwardly facing shouI- 5 ders, the notches in the rods at each end of the bed being disposed toward said end members, a rectangular support for a mattress between said end members, and means for supporting said mattress support from said rods in vertically adjusted positions predetermined by the spacing of said shoulders, said means comprising a vertically elongated guide sleeve mounted on each of said rods for both slidable and lateral swinging movements, said sleeves having downwardly flared openings to receive said rods and downwardly facing shoulders to coact with said shoulders on said rods, each shoulder on a sleeve being located at one side of the lower end of the opening in such sleeve, and suspending links connecting the corners of said mattress support to said sleeves, said links having their upper end pivoted to the lower portions of said sleeves on the sides of the latter having said downwardly facing shoulders, whereby the weight of the mattress support will tend to swing the lower portions of said sleeves inwardly and hold the coacting shoulders on the sleeves and rods in engagement.
