2 Claims.

This invention relates to a combination play 1 pen and crib,- and has for the primary-object the provision of a device of this character which may be easily and quickly extendedas to width to provide either a double crib or a play pen of a maximum size and may be conveniently decreased in width to form a single crib or a play pen of a minimum size and also may be readily disassembled to permit storing thereof within a very small a space.

A further object of thisinvention is the proa vision of a supporting means which includes legs 1 carrying castcrsadjustably connected to the pen the invention consists in certain novel features of construction; combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein after more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention,

- reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a combination play pen and crib constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the de-- vice arranged at a selected inclination.

Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the device and partly broken away to show the means for limiting the adjustment of the frame as to width.

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the device.

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of the device with the floor panels removed.

Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 showing the device with the floor panels installed and adjusted to its minimum size.

Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view illustrating the detachable connection between the legs and the frame.

Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective View, partly in section, showing a portion of one of the end panels and its connection with one of the end sections of the frame.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a frame including side members 6 and end members 7. The side and end members are of skeleton formation, that is, including relatively spaced vertically arranged rods 8 and extending members of tubular formation. The

The panels l3 extend to a selected distance below the lower transversely extending tubular members of the end walls. The purpose of the panels I3 is to close the spaces occurring in the end walls when the'latter are adjusted to bring about the full adjustment of the frame as to its width.

The inner ends of thesections of the lower tubular members of the end walls have formed thereon short sleeves. l5- to form seats for longitudinally extending rods l6 acting as supports for floor panels l1, thelatter being hinged to the lower tubular members of the side walls of the frame and have overlapped relation with each other for the support of a mattress (not shown). The panels I! may be provided with finger holes l8 whereby a person may readily grip said floor panels for raising and lowering thereof. Connected to the lower rods ll] of the end walls and extending parallel with the rods l6 and therebetween is a tie bar I9 carrying cross arms 20 terminating in hooks 2| which are adapted to act as stops for the connecting rods l6 for limiting the adjustment of the frame as to width. When it is desired to adjust the width of the pen or crib the panels I! are swung upwardly and outwardly and then the side members 6 are moved away from each other or toward each other, depending upon whether the pen or crib is to be increased in width or decreased in width and during this movement the rods I6 slide on the arms 20 and if the pen or crib is being increased in width engagement of the hooks 2! on the arms 20 with the rods 16 will limit outward move- Then after the adjustment has been made the panels I! are swung downwardly as shown in Figures 2 and 5.

By providing the hinged panels I! the adjustment of the device is facilitated for when the panels are swung upwardly they will not interfere with adjustment of the parts as they would do if they would have to slide on each other and on the under part of the device.

The side walls 6 and end walls I of the frame include vertically arranged tubular posts 22 which slidably receive legs 23 terminating at their lower ends in forked portions 24. The forked portions 24 have castor type rollers 25 journaled therein. The legs 23 have spaced openings 25' to receive spring catches 26 on the posts whereby the legs may be extended and secured in any of their extended positions, also whereby said legs may be moved substantially fully within the posts to bring the rollers in close proximity to the frame. The legs each are adjustable on the frame of the device whereby the frame may be readily leveled on a floor surface or, if desired, can be raised at either end or at either side and further whereby the frame may be elevated to different distances from the supporting floor.

The catches 28 when located within the openings 25' of the legs secure said legs against rotation in the posts and consequently secure the rollers 25 against swivel movement. However, when the swivel movement is desired the catches may be disengaged from the openings and the legs moved fully within the posts and the rollers then will be free to swing about a vertical axis to permit the entire device to be easily rolled from one place to another and guided during this movement.

When the device is adjusted into a position as shown in Figure 2 it will provide either a play pen of a minimum size or a crib for a single child. However, when the device is adjusted to its full width, as shown in Figure 4, the frame will then provide a pen of a maximum size or a double crib capable of accommodating two children comfortably.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

1. In a play pen and crib, a pair of upright side members, a pair of upright end members, each end member comprising a central panel section and a pair of extensible end sections, the end sections including upper and lower tubular members, said panel sections including upper and lower horizontal rods having their ends telescoping into the upper and lower tubular members, a collar on the central portion of each rod, a vertically arranged plate secured to the collars, said plate having its upper end rolled over the upper tubular members of the end sections, longitudinally extending rods having their ends connected to the lower tubular members, one

" on one side of the collars and the other on the opposite side of the collars, and a pair of panels hingedly connected at their outer edges to the lower edges of the side members, said panels overlapping each other when in lowered position.

2. In a play pen and crib, a pair of upright side members, a pair of upright end members, each end member comprising a central panel section and a pair of extensible end sections, the end sections including upper and lower tubular members, said panel sections including upper and lower horizontal rods having their ends telescoping into the upper and lower tubular members, a collar on the central portion of each rod, a vertically arranged plate secured to the collars, said plate having its upper end rolled over the upper tubular members of the end sections, longitudinally extending rods having their ends connected to the lower tubular members, one on one side of the collars and the other on the opposite side of the collars, a pair of panels hingedly connected at their outer edges to the lower edges of the side members, said panels overlapping each other when in lowered position, a bar extending parallel to the second-mentioned rods and located between the rods and having its ends connected to the central portion of the first-mentioned lower horizontal rods and a transversely extending arm connected with an intermediate portion of the bar and having hooks at its ends for engaging the second-mentioned rods for limiting outward movement of the sections of the end members.
