Description

(No Model.) 7
W. T] KOSINSKI.
I I BED BOTTOM. No. 257,953. Patented May'16, 1882.
hm A a .dttorney N. Prrzns Phulwlilhogmphar. Washington, ac,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF C VVLADYSLAW T. KOSINSKI, Oh BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 257,953, dated May 16, 1882,
Application filed October 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,WLADYSLAWT. KOSINSKI,
ofBrooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms;-and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exacttdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification. 4
The nature of my invention consists in th construction and arrangement of the bed-bottoms, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure l is a longitudinal section on lineww. Fig. ,2 is a plan or top view. Figs. 3, 4, and5 show the various forms of tubes.
A represents the posts of the bedstead, B the side, and B the end rails. The bed-bottom rests on the cleats on either the end or side rails. The frame has on either of the opposite sides a series of tubes, 0, connected thereto. Within said tubes I insert the ends of rattan E, previously cut to the required length. The rattan must be of a thickness to permit play-within the tubes. It is supported throughout its length at intervals by spiral springs 1), thelower ends of which rest onthe usual slats, and the upper ends are secured by soldering or otherwise to tubes 0, of same dimensions as used on the sides of thcframe. The rattan is inserted or passed through said tubes also; The tubes connected to the side of the bed-bottom frame are open throughout, in order to prevent obstruction to the expansion of the rattan.
The tubes may be split, in order to facilitate the play of the rattan within them.
The ends of the rattan may be incased in leather or any other suitable material.
Bed-bottoms have heretofore been constructed with covers of wire or some other fibrous cloth; but this I find objectionable on account of being too rigid and liable to get out of repair by corrosion of the fastenings in securing the cloth to the bed-bottom frame.
My rattan bed-bottom may be used with any existing spring-bed. The advantages in my construction are the smooth surface it presents. It is easily taken apart for cleaning by the withdrawal of the rattan from the tubes, and on account of the light weight it can be removed from and replaced on the bed-lrame by one person, while two are required to do it with existing bed-bottoms.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A bed-bottom constructed ofrattan, substantially as described.
2. The bed-bottom composed of a frame carrying on its upper part and on opposite sides of the rails tubes formed either solid or in skeleton form, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, and two or more similar tubes distributed symmetrically throughout the length or width of the bed-bottom, all said tubes being supported by spiral springs resting on slats and having rattan passed through them, in the manner shown and described.
W. T. KOSINSKI.
