UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM B. ABRAMS, OF \VELLS, NEW YORK.
? FASTENING FOR BEDSTEAD-SLATS.
BPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,741, dated June 23,1885. Application filed Novemberlfi, 1883. (No model.)
T 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM B. ABRAMS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wells, in the county of Hamilton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Bedstead-Slats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fastenings for bedstead-slats, its object being to provide a cheap and effective means which can be readily attached to the supporting-rail of a bedstead, so as tohold the slats in position and prevent the side rails of a bedstead from spreading, said invention being applicable to bedsteads having flat bottoms of ordinary construction, as they are now furnished.
In the accompanying drawings, which illus trate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the parts of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the slats in position, and Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the casting detached.
In the manufacture of bedsteads the side pieces are provided with supporting-rails having recesses in which are placed the ends of the transverse slats; and in the manufacture of the slats and supporting-rails it frequently happens that the recesses in the rail do not correspond in size with the slats, and frequently the slats are shorter than desirable for a closefit; also, that the side rails are liable to spread and thereby allow the slats to become detached or fall from the recesses in the supporting-rails which are made for the reception of the same.
My invention is designed to overcome these difficulties in a cheap and effective manner, and I accomplish the same by providing the ends of the slats with perforations and in attaching to the supportingrail a casting having an upwardly-projecting pin, which pin will fit in a perforation provided for the reception of the same in the end of the bed-slat, the pin formed on the casting being of such construction that it will project upwardly adjacent to the edge of the supportingrail.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, A represents the side board of a bedstead, B the supporting-rail, and C the transverse slats.
The supporting-rail is provided with the usual recesses, indicated by the letter Z), in which the ends of the slats rest.
The main portion of my invention, or the castings which I supply to the trade, is indicated by the letter D, and said casting is pro-- vided with an upwardly-projecting pin, (1, and wings I), which are provided with perforations for the reception of screws, by means of which the casting may be attached to the supportingrail B.
It will be seen in the accompanying drawings that the upper part of this casting is at right angles with the pin, and also that the inner side of the pin is vertical or on a line with the inner face of the casting, while the outer or opposite side projects beyond the outside face, by which means the pin projects up wardly beyond the recess 2) in the supportingrail.
The bed'slat G is provided at a suitable point with a perforation or recess, 0, which may or may not, as desired, extend through the slats. This perforation, as will be readily seen, is for the reception of the pin.
From the foregoing description as to the construction and application of my invention it will be readily seen that when the perforation c is placed over the pin 1) the slats will be held securely in position and will be retained so they cannot be displaced except by an upward movement, and when the slats are in position, or placed over the pin, the side rails will be prevented from spreading, and the side flanges or wings adjacent to the base of the pin extending sidewise at right angles therewith will form a horizontal bearing for the slats should the lower portion of the recess 1) not be out true or horizontal, so as to prevent any rocking of the slats, thereby preventing creaking from a movement of the same.
I am aware that prior to my invention castings have been employed upon the head and foot posts of a bedstead, so as to afford a support for the side rails, as shown in the patent of E. R. Ball, No. 10,731, dated April 4, 1854:; also, that perforated castings which afford supports for the bedsteads have been attached directly to the side rails; and I do not claim such, broadly, as my invention, as my invention is designed more especially to prevent the rocking of the bed-slats and the spreading of the side rails, and forms a means which can be readily attached to beds already manufactured.
It will be obvious that the castings herein described are of such construction that they can readily and easily be applied to any of the ordinary forms of bedsteads without necessitating the slightest alteration in the said bedstead, and that when so applied the upper edges of the side wings form positive bearings for the slats, thereby preventing the latter from resting unevenly, and, further, permitting the slats to transversely hold the'side rails in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a casting, herein described, having a body portion approximately of a width equal to that of the ordinary slat-receiving recesses formed in a bed stead-rail, and provided with a straight upper edge, a vertical lug or projection, d, formed integral with said body portion, the rear face of both body portion and lug being flat and flush with each other, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. ABRAMS.
