.1M PHoro-muosfmfmc m Mx (assums maa-ESQ) UNITED STATES HARMON D. OLDS, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS PATENT OFFICE.
HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES J. BAYER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,756, dated May 13, 1873; application filed February 13, 18,73.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARMON D. OLDs, of Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsinBedstead-Braces, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple device for holding the side rails of the bedsteads firmly, and preventing the tendency of the slats to strain and loosen the fastenings ofthe parts ofthe bedstead-frame, and to avoid the creaking sound peculiar to most bedsteads in use; and my said invention consists of a bent plate, the arms of which project beyond the bed or seat for the rails, for the-purpose of bracing the bedstead endwise,whi1e also forming side socket-braces, and thus prevent the creaking of the bedstead, so very objectionable in ordinary-made bedsteads.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a view in perspective of a bedstead, showing the application of my invention, and Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail view, showing more clearly the bracing device.
- As isusual in slat-bedsteads, the slat-bearers A are secured to the side rails B of the frame, and said slat-bearers are provided with open sockets for the reception of slats C 5 and, in order to rmly brace the frame and prevent its spreading apart, I provide the middle sockets thereof with a metallic plate, D, fastened in any suitable manner to the side rail A, so shaped and arranged as to receive and firmly hold a dovetailed brace-bar or slat E, so that, as both sides of the bedstead are provided with this metallic plate D, no lateral pressure upon the side rails can affect their stability.
plane by reason of the wedge-shaped socket,
piece D projecting a slight distance out from the slat-bearer A of the rails.
I sometimes apply this device to the head and foot of the bedstead-frame also,` which serves to overcome any warping which might occurfrom the super-strain upon the middle parts of the side rails. This feature is clearly illustrated in the perspective drawing, the special object of the device being to hold thc bed-rails firmly in place, and thereby render the bedstead firm and strong.
I am aware that a dovetail socket and dovetailed slat end is not new; but such device has been found ineffectual to accomplish the purpose of my improvement; that is, to aord lengthwise firmness.
Having described my invention, I claim- The bent metallic plate D with its endsprojecting beyond its bed or bearer A, and secured in the bearer-mortise to form an endwise brace to the bedstead, as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 6th day of February, A. D.
HARMON D. OLDS. Witnesses A. N. EAsTMAN, H. BENNETT.
