METALLIC RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,110, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed May 2?, 1887. Serial No. 230,665. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H.TROXELL, a citizen ofthe United Stat'es,resident at Strongstown, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Metallic RailroadTies; and Ido declare the following to be a fnll, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings isa top view of my improved metallic railroad'tie. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on linux00, Fig. 1.
The invention relates to improvements in metallic railroadties; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the tie, provided with the raised scatlugs B B, which have the horizontal inner portions, 1), to hold the bases of the flanges of the corresponding rails,C O. The seat-lugs have shoulders D rising at the outer side ofthe horizontal parts I), which shoulders conform to the outer portion,E,of the base-flanges ofthe corresponding rail, to the web F above said flange, and to the under part of the tread, so that it lies snugly against and supports the outer side ofthe rail. Thehorizontal slots 1)?) are grooved deep enough to receive the horizontal boltclamps G, and said grooves are extended in the form of horizontal perforations H, which are made through the lower portion of the seat-lugs B, as shown.
the rails can be slid or drawn out of position.
when broken or damaged and others quickly substituted.
If desired, the stems of the clamps may be slotted near their ends for the reception of keys to hold the clampsin place. In that case the nuts J will not be used.
Having described my invention, I claim- The metallic tie A, having the raised railseat lug, consisting ofthelongitudinal grooved inner portion, 1), with the rising shoulders D on the outer side of said longitudinal portion fitting the base, web, and under portion of the tread of the rail, the perforations H through the lower portions of said seat-lug, being extensions of the groovesof the horizontal portion 1), and the bolt-clamps, G, adapted to be seated in said grooves below the rail and to pass through said perforations to the outside of the seat-lug, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. TROXELL.
