into the frame and the convenient removing of the back for inserting or removing a picture is obtained without marring the silver frame; and for this purpose the invention consists of a fastener for photograph-frames which comprises a metallic frame provided with a bent-over lug at its upper and lower rear-edge, a back provided at its upper end with a recess corresponding to the bentover lug at the upper end of the frame, and a catch-plate that is pivoted to the upper part of the back and adapted to be placed under the bent-over lug, as will be fully described hereinafter and "finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective rear-view of my improved fastener for photograph-frames with plush-backs, Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the metallic frame drawn on a larger scale, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the back, shown as removed from the frame, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5, 5, Fig. 2, drawn on a larger scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate oorresponding parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, (1 represents the metallic frame of my improved photograph-frame. This frame is preferably made of sterling silver, of oblong or other shape, and provided with a rim a which is bent up at right angles to the front-part of the frame, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper and lower portions of the rim a of the frame a are provided at their rear-edges with bent-over lugs a which serve to retain the back I) in position in the frame. The upper part of the back I) is recessed at d, as shown in Fig; 4, so that the back can be inserted in the frame by first placing the lower part of the back in position on the lower part of the frame and then pressing the upper part of the back into the frame in such a manner that the recessed portion passes the upper lug a The back I) is provided with a hinged brace e as customary in photograph-frames of this class.

Heretofore the back was retained in the metallic frame by the friction of the plushcovering of the back, but this was not reliable as after some time the back became loose and was liable to drop out when handling the frame. For preventing the getting loose or detaching of the back from the frame a, a catch-plate f is arranged on the rear of the back, said catch-plate being pivoted at one side near the bent-over lug a at the upper part of the metallic frame a. The catch-plate f is provided at its opposite free end with a slight bead or raise f for conveniently moving the same over the back clear of the bent-over lug 0. or under the same, as desired.

When it is desired to fasten the back in the frame, the catch-plate f is moved under the bent-over lug (1 whereby the back is firmly held in position in the frame owing to the friction of the catch-plate with the covering of the back. Likewise it is held in position when the catch-plate f is moved clear of the bent-over lug a ,-in which posi tion the back can be readily removed by first moving the upper part outwardly from the frame. By means of the catch-plate or fastener f the back is always held securely in position in the frame and the accidental detaching of the back, even after the same has been used for some time, is prevented. The catch-plate forms a neat, reliable and inexpensive attachment for the hotographframes of the class described an renders the same more attractive and effective in use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. The combination, with a metallic frame provided with bent-over lugs at the upper and lower rear-portions, of a back provided with a recess at its upper end corresponding with the bent-over lug of the frame, and a pivoted catch-plate adapted to be placed under the lug for retaining the back in position in the frame.
