UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. HAYDEN, OF COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO HENRY BLISS HAYDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR CLOSING AND OPENING COVERS FOR INK-WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,148, dated October 28, 1890. Application filed August 19, 1890. Serial No. 3621400. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 0010- rado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Oolorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Closing and Opening Covers for Ink-Wells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novelim provements in devices for closing and opening covers for ink-wells and the like; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, whereby a lid or cover is automaticallycaused to close the mouth of a well to be continuously covered when not in use.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate myinvention, in which Figure 1 represents a front view of an ordinary ink-well, showing my device applied thereto. Fig.2 is aperspective of the clamping-bars detached from the ink-well. Fig. 3 is a side view of the adjustable clamp.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A represents an ordinary ink-well to which my device is attached, and B designates a clamp therefor, which latter consists of two spring arms or bars a a, the former of which is constructed with a horizontal portion or arm b, havinga series of indentations b in its outer face and an outwardly-turned lip 0, having a slot 0 through it. The transverse horizontal portion or spring-arm cl is bent at right angles to the portion 1), and the extended end (1 thereof is bent at right angles to the portion d. The said bars I), (l, and cl are formed integral. The spring-arm a. consists of the transverse bar 6 and the horizontal bar 6, which latter is bent at right angles to said bar e and is provided at its end f with an inwardly-projecting pin f, which is designed to engage one of the series of indentations in the arm aforesaid when the clamp is applied to an ink-well. These springarms are provided with pads g g on their inner faces and are designed to assist the springarms in firmly holding the clamp to the inkwell, as well as preventing the arms from contact-directly with the ink-well and thus saving the latter from injury.
0 indicates a standard, at the lower end of which is formed a slotted guideway h, the offset portion h of which is female screw-threaded to receive a screw 2', by which the standard is removably secured to the extended arm of the angular spring-bar aforesaid. This stand ard is constructed with an offset or short arm 1', in the upper face of which is made an indentation or pivotal bearingj, and an upper offset or short arm j is provided, having therein a vertical female screw threaded opening, inwhich is placed a thumb-screw k, in the lower end of which is an indentation or pivotal bearing Z, which bearin gs are designed to receive the points of a pivotal bar, which I will now refer to.
D designates a pivotal bar consisting of a short arm r), at the end an of which are provided male screw-threads m, which receive a female-threaded nut n, and the long arm n, at the outer end of which is a hook o and a loop 0', which is secured thereto and extending at right angles to said bar. This bar tapers outwardly in either direction from the point p, at which point extend two short arms 19 p at right angles to said bar, which short arms taper to a point and form a journal or pivot for said bar when thelatter is connected to the standard. The upper portion of this standard inclines forwardly, as shown at 1", thus causing the indentations in the offset and end of the thumb-screw to be out of a perpendicular line with one another, thereby providing means whereby the pointed pivotal connection of the swinging bar inclines upwardly and forwardly.
E represents a cover or lid for the ink-well, in the center of which is an eye 0", which engages the hooked end of the pivoted bar aforesaid and forms a swivel-connection at this point. In connecting the parts to one an other the two spring angular bars are connected by passing the horizontal portion having the pin in its end through the slot in the upturned end of the bar having the series of indentations, after which the spring-arms are passed on each side of an ink-well and the pads forced against the same. At the same time the pin enters one of the indentations, thus firmly gripping said ink-well by the spring-arms having the pads.
The standard is attached to the extended arm by the latter passing through the slot in the lower end, after which the standard is adjusted2'. (2., moved forward-toward the ink-well until the cover comes directly over the month of the same, after which the screw 11 is tightened, thus holding said standard in a fixed position. The points of the pivotal bar are then inserted in the bearings, and the screw is turned sufficiently to retain said points in place, thereby providing pivotal connection or bearing between the standard and arm aforesaid, after which the nutis adjusted to a nicety in order to balance the beam or pivoted bar.
The angular bars which grasp the ink-well can be adjusted to fit snugly any size or shape ink-well or the like simply by adjusting the same, and the pin catching in the indentations in one of the bars holds them firmly to one another. o
In uncovering the ink-well the operator simply touches the wire loop with his pen, which causes the lid to move rearwardly and upwardly, the bar turning on its pivot, and remains ofi the ink-well sufficient time to permit the pen being dipped therein when the lid returns automatically and closes the opening in the ink-well. The movement this lid receives in leaving the ink-well is inclined, and as the lid goes back itrises, caused by the pivotal points of the bar D being out of a vertical line with one another, and provides gravitation, whereby the lid is brought back slowly over said well. The peculiar motion given to this swinging arm permits a gentle easy movement to the ink-well cover. The weight or nut on the opposite end to that of the hooked end of this beam or bar serves to balance said beam nicely, and the balance can be obtained by simply giving said nut aslight turn, causing it to move toward or from the pivotal connection or standard. It will thus be observed that by my device the operator simply touches the wire loop, forcing the bar with its lid backward, and after dipping the pen theink-well is closed bythe lid returning I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters .Patent, is
1. In combination with an adjustable clamp for ink-wells, a standard having upper, lower, and central oifsets and bea rings for the standard, and pivoted bar D, the former being removably secured to the adjustable springclamp B by means of the screwi, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the adjustable spring-clamp B, the standard 0, provided with the offset h, having therein an opening through which a clamping-screw i is passed, and offsets t" and J, through the latter of which is passeda set-screw for securing the pivotal bar D to the standard, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the adjustable spring-clamp, the standard having the guideway 71-, and the respective ofisets and bearings, of the pivoted bar D, provided with short arms p p and screw-threads at its rear end to receive an adjustable screw-threaded nut or weight and having secured to its forward end a loop 0', and cover E, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
4. The within-described device for automatically closing an ink-well or other receptacle, consisting of an adjustable clamp composed of two angular bars adapted to be secured to an ink-well or other receptacle, a
standard horizontally adjustable upon one of these angular bars, and a beam or bar pivoted to this standard and provided with a cover, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence 'of two witnesses.
JAMES H. HAYDEN.
